Kansas City have won five straight AFC West titles. Can anyone stop Patrick Mahomes & Co. making it six-in-a-row this season?
AFC West Predictions & Tips: Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City’s explosive offense was shut down by Tampa Bay as they were denied back-to-back Super Bowls.
That has not dented confidence in the Chiefs though. They are the favorites to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy this season.
That is no surprise – they still have Patrick Mahomes and he is surrounded by outstanding weapons at running back, receiver and tight end.
Probably more importantly, he will be protected by a much improved offensive line than the one that was run over by Tampa Bay in February.
Defensively they experienced a dip in 2020 as injury caused them problems throughout.
They have made some upgrades in the offseason though so if everyone stays healthy this should be a good group.
Everything is pointing to Kansas City maintaining their stranglehold on the AFC West this season.
AFC West Predictions & Tips: Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles made a head coaching change in the summer, replacing Anthony Lynn with Brandon Staley.
Staley will benefit from having a talented QB already in place after Justin Herbert lit up the NFL to earn Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2020.
The Chargers have revamped the offensive line with the aim of better protecting Herbert in 2021.
If they can, that will give the talented youngster time to link up with a strong receiving group.
Defensively we can expect a sizeable change with Staley calling the shots.
Staley turned the other LA team into one of the best defenses in the entire league and he can get this Chargers group heading in the right direction.
LA could challenge for the postseason this year, but if they make it it will likely be thanks to a wildcard berth.
AFC West Predictions & Tips: Denver Broncos
Vic Fangio is a defensive genius and should send out another strong unit in 2021.
Productivity will revolve around how healthy they can stay though – injuries played a role in last season’s drop-off.
Denver need the defense to be dominant too, because their offense needs plenty of work.
They passed up talented QBs in the draft to opt for a battle between Teddy Bridgewater and Drew Lock – a battle that has still not been decided.
Until that question is answered they cannot solve the other issues they have.
Denver are a long, long way from dethroning KC and another losing season could be on the cards.
AFC West Predictions & Tips: Las Vegas Raiders
Derek Carr is still under center in Vegas but he will find himself playing behind a much-changed offensive line.
If this line performs better than the 2020 version this could be a productive season for the offense.
They have weapons in the passing game – Henry Ruggs, Darren Waller and Bryan Edwards – and possess a talented running back tandem of Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake.
Defensively they desperate need to improve though.
The defense stunk up ‘Sin City’ in 2020 and that resulted in the arrival of Gus Bradley as co-ordinator.
Bradley has been handed over a dozen new players to work with and some of those new faces are projected starters.
However, if they do not make considerable improvement on that side of the football, the chances of the Raiders rivalling the Chiefs for the AFC West title are slim at best.
Verdict
Kansas City are the best in the West by some distance. Their dominance should continue.
