The Avalanche, who went 50-25-7 in the regular season, lost their playoff opener against Winnipeg, 7-6, but responded with four consecutive wins to advance.
They beat the Jets 5-2 on the road, 6-2 and 5-1 at home, and 6-3 on the road to set up this meeting with Dallas.
Colorado's win streak reached five games in the series opener as they beat Dallas 4-3 in overtime, but their form has nose-dived since then.
The Avalanche lost 5-4 in the second game in Dallas, before returning home for 4-1 and 5-1 defeats at the hands of the Stars.

Dallas head back home with their fate in their own hands, having won three consecutive games to take a 3-1 lead.
The Stars, who won the Central Division with a 52-21-9 record, made a rough start to the playoffs as they dropped back-to-back games at home, losing 4-3 and 3-1 to Vegas.
However, they responded by taking four of the next five games to advance, winning 3-2 (OT) and 4-2 on the road, before sandwiching a 2-0 road loss with 3-2 and 2-1 wins at home.
Dallas then lost the opening game of this series too, falling 4-3 in overtime to Colorado, but their response has been emphatic.
The Stars levelled the series with a 5-3 victory at home, and then went out on the road to register 4-1 and 5-1 victories in Colorado.

Dallas have taken firm control of this series and now they have home ice advantage.
