The Rangers, who went 55-23-4 in the regular season, made straightforward work of Washington in the first round as they swept the Capitals in four games.

They then made a flying start to this series against Carolina, taking control with three consecutive wins.

New York won 4-3 in regulation and 4-3 in overtime at home, before heading out on the road to down the Hurricanes in overtime, 3-2.

However, the Rangers have not won since, following up a 4-3 defeat in Carolina with a 4-1 loss at home on Monday night.

Carolina head back home with an opportunity to knot up this series at 3-3 and force Game 7 in New York.

The Hurricanes, who compiled a 52-23-7 regular-season record, beat the New York Islanders in five games in the first round.

They dug themselves into an early who in this series though, as they lost three consecutive games against the New York Rangers.

Carolina began the series with a couple of 4-3 road defeats, one in regulation and one in overtime, and then lost 3-2 in overtime at home to leave themselves one loss away from elimination.

The Hurricanes have responded in this tough position though, staying alive with a 4-3 home win and a 4-1 victory at Madison Square Garden.
