Arthur Gea’s terrific current form deserves respect, but it may still fall short against a quality opponent like Tomas Machac.

The Czech should have enough to win this matchup and cover the minus 3.5 games handicap, whether it is decided in straight sets or goes the distance.

Stats - Machac Tests In-Form Gea

  • Arthur Gea has won 10 of his 11 matches so far in the 2026 season.
  • Gea is aiming to reach his maiden quarterfinal appearance at main-tour level.
  • Tomas Machac holds a solid 7–2 win-loss record in 2026.
  • This will be Machac's first-ever match in Montpellier, having received a first-round bye.

Head-to-Head

These two players have never met before.

Arthur Gea Flying in 2026

Arthur Gea has made a rapid start to the 2026 season, winning 10 of his first 11 matches.

He opened the year by lifting the Adelaide No. 1 Challenger title, then carried that momentum into the Australian Open, where he won four matches as a qualifier before falling to Stan Wawrinka in a five-set second-round battle.

Gea has continued that strong run in Montpellier, where he made his debut and claimed a rare tour-level main-draw victory by defeating fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Machac Fast Out of the Blocks

Tomas Machac has also made a flying start to the 2026 season, lifting the title in Adelaide before backing it up with a run to the third round at the Australian Open.

He possesses all the tools to thrive indoors and has generally posted strong results on this surface across his career.

Last season, however, was an unusual dip indoors for the Czech, as he played just five matches on indoor hard courts and lost three of them, including back-to-back first-round exits in Vienna and Paris.

Looking to put that blip behind him, Machac arrives in Montpellier for his tournament debut, having reached the quarterfinals at the indoor ATP Dallas event around this time last year.

Verdict

It is tricky to back Thomas Machac for a straight-sets win given Arthur Gea’s terrific form, which clearly deserves respect.

Still, Machac has enough quality to control the match across two sets and should be able to cover the -3.5 games handicap, which looks the safer betting option here.
