The clay in Houston plays differently from traditional slow clay, but even accounting for that, Thiago Tirante looks well placed in this matchup. Against a relatively inexperienced Colton Smith at this level and venue, he holds a clear edge.

  • He has a 7–8 career record vs Top 100 players.

Smith Receives Houston Wildcard

Colton Smith struggled in qualifying recently, failing to get through in three consecutive tournaments before receiving a main-draw wildcard in Houston.

The American has shown flashes of promise, winning the Cleveland Challenger and reaching the quarterfinal in San Diego, but has lacked consistency, with most of his other events ending without main-draw wins.

He has made six tour-level main-draw appearances, winning his opening match only twice, including a quarterfinal run in Houston last year and a second-round showing at Indian Wells in 2025.

Tirante Continues Steady Run

Thiago Agustín Tirante is coming off a second-round exit in Miami, where he entered as a lucky loser but lost to Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.

Despite a couple of qualifying exits in Adelaide and Indian Wells, he has shown consistency by clearing the first round in his other events, including quarterfinal runs in Rio de Janeiro and the Manama Challenger.

He makes his Houston debut this week and carries a strong 12-5 record in first-round matches on tour, having won his last four.
