Luciano Darderi has played some scintillating tennis this week and comes in full of confidence after a dominant run. However the home support is expected to play a major role in this final, with the crowd firmly behind Cerundolo in Buenos Aires.

Darderi is Argentine born but now represents Italy, while Cerundolo will have the backing of the home fans throughout. That support could prove decisive in what looks set to be a high intensity and very close final.

Darderi’s Dominance Meets Cerundolo’s Home Strength

  • Cerundolo has won seven of his last eight matches in Buenos Aires.
  • He holds a 3-3 record in tour level championship matches.
  • Darderi has been dominant this week, conceding only 17 games across three matches.
  • Darderi owns a perfect 4-0 record in tour level finals.

Cerundolo Chasing First Home Title

Francisco Cerundolo has built much of his success on South American clay, grinding out wins and collecting titles at lower levels. Despite that, he is still searching for a tour level title at home and in South America, something that has eluded him so far.

He came close to changing that in Buenos Aires last year but ran into a red hot Joao Fonseca in the final and fell in straight sets. That defeat kept him waiting for a breakthrough on home soil.

Cerundolo has strong history at this venue with multiple deep runs and plenty of tough wins along the way. He reached the final all the way from the qualifiers in 2021 and took out the top-seed Alexander Zverev last year.

This week he has not been at his absolute peak but has handled his matches efficiently. He has come through all three rounds in straight sets and arrives in the final with solid momentum.

Darderi Building a Perfect Finals Record

Luciano Darderi arrived on the main tour later than Cerundolo but made an immediate impact. He enjoyed a breakthrough season early in 2024 with a title run in Cordoba and has looked increasingly comfortable at this level since then.

He continued that rise by adding more tour level titles across the following season and has built an impressive record 4-0 in finals. For a relatively new name on the main tour, his composure in championship matches has stood out.

This week he has been a dominant force, brushing aside every opponent in convincing fashion. His run has included wins over seasoned clay courters, such as Sebastian Baez and Pedro Martinez.

Verdict

Both players are very comfortable grinding out wins on South American clay and know how to handle long physical matches. They have the tools to stay competitive in a tight final and neither is likely to fade easily.

The key factor could be the home support, with the Argentine crowd expected to rally strongly behind Cerundolo. In what should be a very close contest, he holds a slight edge thanks to that backing and greater big match experience.
