Monfils Struggles Continue Amid Injuries

Gael Monfils has played only four tournaments this year, winning just two matches, which has seen him drop outside the top 200. At the same stage last year, he had won 14 matches, including a title in Auckland.

Since March last year, he has struggled with recurring fitness issues that have disrupted his progress. He has also indicated that 2026 could be his final season, having suffered nine opening-round exits in his last 14 events.

Monfils is making his 13th appearance at the Monte Carlo Masters. He has cleared the opening round seven times, with his best result being a run to the final in 2016.

Griekspoor Seeks Form After Injury

Tallon Griekspoor returned to action in Marrakech after withdrawing from the Dubai final due to a hamstring injury, but lost to Luca Van Assche in three sets in the opening round.

The 29-year-old had a difficult start to the season, losing all four matches in Australia, including the United Cup. He recovered well with quarterfinal runs in Montpellier and Rotterdam, and a final in Dubai before the injury setback.

Griekspoor has played in Monte Carlo Masters four times, with three first-round exits. His only win at the event came against Dominik Koepfer in 2024.

Verdict

With both players carrying fitness concerns, the early stages look key. Monfils to win the first set stands out as a value play given his tendency to start fast this year.
