There are real concerns around Lorenzo Musetti’s fitness after his injury at the Australian Open, with limited match practice since then. Arriving in Monte Carlo underprepared could leave him vulnerable against a confident and in-form Valentin Vacherot.

Vacherot Seeks Big Upset

  • He has won 23 of his last 28 matches vs outside Top 20 players.

Musetti Seeks Form After Setback

Lorenzo Musetti is coming off an impressive 2025 season, where he recorded 11 quarterfinal-or-better finishes, helping him break into the top 10.

After a long season, he dealt with fitness issues and suffered a leg injury during his Australian Open quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic while leading by two sets. He returned in Indian Wells but lost in straight sets to Marton Fucsovics in the opening round.

Musetti now enters a crucial clay stretch with significant points to defend. Last year, he reached at least the semifinal in all four events during this period, with three of his losses coming against Carlos Alcaraz.

This will be his sixth appearance in Monte Carlo. After a first-round loss on debut in 2021, he has won at least two matches in each of his last four visits, including a run to the final last year.

Vacherot Continues Impressive Rise

Valentin Vacherot defeated Juan Manuel Cerundolo 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round in Monte Carlo. It marks his second main-draw win here after also progressing past the opening round last year.

In his previous appearance, he advanced to the second round but lost to Grigor Dimitrov. He will now look to go one step further this time.

The 27-year-old has built strong momentum since his breakthrough Masters title in Shanghai last year, backing it up with quarterfinal runs in Paris, Adelaide, and Acapulco, along with a third round at the Australian Open and fourth round in Miami.

Vacherot holds a 4-1 record in second-round matches at Masters events, with his only loss coming against Dimitrov at this stage in Monte Carlo last year.

Verdict

If Musetti shows signs of rust or physical issues, the door opens for an upset. Vacherot to win and Vacherot to win a set both offer strong value in this matchup.
