Ryder Cup Preview & Picks
A star-studded field of the world's elite golfers have assembled at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club to compete for the prestigious Ryder Cup in Rome this weekend.
Can Team Europe win their seventh straight title on home soil, or will Team USA retain the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993?
Team USA thrashed Team Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, in 2021, inflicting the heaviest defeat in Ryder Cup history.
Past and present major winners in the lineup include Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
These are our best bets for the 2023 Ryder Cup.
The Teams
EUROPE:
Ludvig Aberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Nicolai Hojgaard, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka.
Captain: Luke Donald.
USA:
Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Rickie Fowler, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas.
Captain: Zach Johnson.
The Team To Win
Team Europe leads the way in the head-to-head count with 12 victories to nine against Team USA in the Ryder Cup since 1979.
The hosts have accumulated their advantage over Team USA through their excellent performances on European soil, winning eight cups compared to two for Team USA in ten meetings, including six in a row.
Both teams have retained seven players each from the 2021 Ryder Cup, with Team USA having the strongest team on paper for this edition; however, history is against Team USA, as they last won the Ryder Cup in Europe back in 1993.
Additionally, Nicolai Hojgaard and Robert MacIntyre won the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Italian Open played on this course, including runner-up finishes for Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick, and 4th place for Rory McIIroy and 8th for Tyrrell Hatton.
Team Europe looks set to regain the Ryder Cup from Team USA, as many of their players have achieved excellent results at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club when playing on the DP World Tour.
Tournament Winning Margin
The upcoming Ryder Cup will be a much more closely fought battle than the previous edition, as both teams boast an impressive lineup of talented players; however, Team Europe have the advantage of playing on home soil.
Scores between Team Europe and Team USA have been conclusive over the last four editions of the Ryder Cup, with Europe winning 16.5-11.5 in 2014, USA 17-11 in 2016, Europe 17.5-10.5 in 2018, and USA 19-9 in 2021.
Close, competitive match-ups are predicted, as both teams have world beaters at their disposal, with Team Europe coming on top to win the Ryder Cup by 15-13.
Top Points Scorer for Team Europe
Rory McIlroy has been outstanding this season, winning three events on the PGA Tour and DP World Your, including multiple top-ten places.
McIlroy captured titles at the CJ Cup in South Carolina, Hero Dubai Desert Classic, and Genesis Scottish Open.
Other notable results achieved by McIlroy include placing T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, 3rd at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, 2nd at the US Open, T3 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, 4th at the BMW Championship, 4th at the Tour Championship, T6 at the Open Championship, T7 at the PGA Championship, T7 at the Memorial Tournament, T7 at the Travelers Championship, T7 at the BMW PGA Championship and T9 at the RBC Canadian Open.
McIlroy has made seven appearances at the Ryder Cup, winning in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018 and accumulating a record of 12-12-4.
Despite Rory McIlroy's recent poor run of results at the Ryder Cup, he comes into this edition in better shape than in previous years and will be hard to peg back if he is in the mood.
Top Points Scorer for Team USA
Xander Schauffele has had an impressive season on the PGA Tour, placing inside the top ten on nine occasions.
The best results achieved by Schauffele include placing 2nd at the Wells Fargo Championship, 2nd at the Tour Championship, T3 at American Express, 4th at the Hero World Challenge, T4 at the RBC Heritage, T4 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T5 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T8 at the BMW Championship, T9 at the ZOZO Championship, T10 at the WM Phoenix Open, T10 at the Masters and T10 at the US Open.
Schauffele has played at two Ryder Cups, being part of the 2021 winning team at Whistling Straits and compiling a record of 3-1-0.
Xander Schauffele has been ultra-consistent this season and will fancy his chances to score the most points for Team USA in Rome this weekend.
Format
The Ryder Cup takes place over three days, comprising 28 matches and 28 points at stake.
Each victory in a match is worth one point, and a tie is worth half a point.
Day 1: 4 Foursome matches in the morning and 4 Four-ball matches in the afternoon.
Day 2: 4 Foursome matches in the morning and 4 Four-ball matches in the afternoon.
Day 3: 12 Singles matches.
14.5 points are required to win the Ryder Cup, and 14 points are needed for the defending champion to retain the Cup.
Verdict
Team Europe will use the knowledge gained from playing at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club to extend their unbeaten run on home soil over Team USA to seven consecutive victories and reclaim the Ryder Cup.
A very competitive contest is predicted between Team Europe and Team USA, with the Europeans eventually gaining the upper hand to emerge 15-13 winners over their counterparts.
Rory McIlroy has shown throughout the season that he is in excellent touch and will lead from the front for Team Europe to regain the Ryder Cup.
Xander Schauffele is one of the few players from Team USA that has won outside of his homeland on more than one occasion, giving him the confidence to secure the most points among the American players this weekend.
