Presidents Cup Preview & Picks
A stellar lineup of American and International golfing stars converge in North Carolina to compete for the prestigious Presidents Cup. Will Team USA win comfortably, or can the Internationals cause an upset?
Team USA hold a commanding lead of 11 victories compared to one for the Internationals, with one draw in 13 editions of the Presidents Cup.
Past and present major winners in the lineup include Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott.
Top Points Scorer For Team USA
Xander Schauffle has been in superb form the latter half of the season, winning three tournaments.
Schauffle won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at the end of April and has not looked back since.
His subsequent six starts were outstanding, including finishing T13, T18, T14 and victory at the Travelers Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open.
Schauffle's last two tournaments were equally impressive, placing T3 at the BMW Championship and 4th at the Tour Championship.
The American golfer made his debut at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia and finished with three wins and two losses.
Schauffle has shown that he is on top of his game and will relish the chance to pick up the most points for his team.
Top Points Scorer For Team International
Sungjae Im has been in excellent form since the end of July, achieving top results.
Im placed T2 at the 3M Open, T2 at the Wyndham Championship, 12th at the FedEx Cup Championship, T15 at the BMW Championship and T2 at the Tour Championship.
The Korean golfer featured at the 2019 Presidents Cup, finishing with a record of three wins, one draw and one defeat from five matches
Im has been in great touch and is an accurate driver of the ball, which will suit his game at the Quail Hollow golf course.
The Teams
United States
Captain: Davis Love III
Team: Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Cameron Young, and Kevin Kisner.
Team USA have a star-studded lineup compared to the Internationals, with many of their players winning multiple tournaments in 2022, giving them the advantage to retain the Presidents Cup for the ninth edition in a row.
International
Captain: Trevor Immelman
Team: Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Joohyung Tom Kim, Corey Conners, Adam Scott, Mito Pereira, K.H. Lee, Si Woo Kim, Taylor Pendrith, Cameron Davis, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, and Sebastian Munoz.
The Internationals suffered a blow to the ambitions after Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann were banned from competing in the Presidents Cup as they had recently joined the controversial LIV Golf Series.
They don't have the same depth as Team USA, with some players required to play above their weight to secure the points needed to win the competition.
Format
The Presidents Cup takes place over four days, comprising 30 matches and 30 points at stake.
Each match is worth one point, and if a match ends in a tie, it’s worth half a point.
Thursday, five foursomes matches; Friday, five fourball matches; Saturday, four fourballs and then four foursomes matches; Sunday, 12 singles matches.
Verdict
Although scores between the two teams have been close in three of the last four editions, Team USA is tipped to win 18-12 at the Quail Hollow Country Club this weekend.
Xander Schauffle has had a big year, with three victories under his belt and will have no problems with the pressure and can finish as the leading points scorer for Team USA.
Sungjae Im has been close to winning multiple times in the past few months, and he will use that form to lead the attack for the Internationals and secure the most points for his team.
