  • The tournament takes place at the TPC San Antonio, Texas
  • Preview, predictions & stats
The PGA Tour and players are in Texas for the penultimate tournament before the first Major of the year at next week's Masters in Georgia. Who will claim the honours at the TPC San Antonio this weekend?

There is much to play for at this event, as the winner will get to compete as the Masters, if not already eligible.

J.J. Spaun is back in Texas to defend his title after victory in 2022.

Past major winners in the lineup include Hideki Matsuyama, Lucas Glover, Jimmy Walker, Stewart Cink, Jason Dufner, Padraig Harrington and Francesco Molinari.

These are our top selections that could loft the trophy this weekend.

Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton has been producing consistent results this season, especially on the PGA Tour, going close on a few occasions to winning his second career title in the United States.

Hatton placed T45 at the ZOZO Championship, T13 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina, T7 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship (DP World Tour), T38 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic (DP World Tour), T6 at the WM Phoenix Open, T40 at the Genesis Invitational, T4 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and an excellent second at the Players Championship.

The 31-year-old Englishman is making his debut at TPC San Antonio.

Hatton has been playing well and will fancy his chances to take home the winner's cheque this weekend.

Corey Conners

Corey Conners has had a solid year on the PGA Tour thus far and tasted success at this tournament a few years ago.

The Canadian started with a missed-cut performance at the Fortinet Championship before placing T25 at the ZOZO Championship, T23 at the CJ Cup, 16th at the Hero World Challenge, T18 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, and T12 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

His subsequent four starts have been mediocre, finishing T50 at the WM Phoenix Open, 61st at the Genesis Invitational, T21 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and MC at the recent Players Championship.

However, the 31-year-old has an excellent record at the Valero Texas Open, placing T26 in 2018, winning in 2019, and finishing T14 in 2021 and T35 in 2022.

Conners has a proven record at this event and has the game to secure his second title in Texas come Sunday.

Hideki Matsuyama

Hideki Matsuyama missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational but bounced back with a credible fifth overall at the recent Players Championship in Florida.

Before that, the 31-year-old Japanese golfer placed T25 at the Fortinet Championship, T40 at the ZOZO Championship, T34 at the CJ Cup, T21 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, T48 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T9 at the Farmers Insurance Open, and T29 WM Phoenix Open.

He has made two appearances at the Valero Texas opening, finishing T30 in 2021 and withdrawing in round two of last year's edition with a neck injury.

Matsuyama appears to have turned the corner after his display at the Players Championship and is no stranger to winning on the PGA Tour.

Ryan Fox

Ryan Fox did not have the best start to his new season on the DP World Tour, missing the cut at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and ISPS Handa Australian Open before finishing T65 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The 36-year-old regained his touch by placing T20 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T11 at the Ras al Khaimah Championship, and T17 at the Singapore Classic before heading to the PGA Tour.

The New Zealander finished T14 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T27 at the Players Championship.

He is making his debut at the Valero Texas Open this weekend.

Fox has done well on his short stint on the PGA Tour thus far and could upstage the others in San Antonio.

Verdict

Hatton has been knocking hard in recent starts and can go all the way at TPC San Antonio.

Conners has been thereabouts and should enter calculations this weekend.

Matsuyama will be challenging for victory in Texas if he can replicate his recent performance on the PGA Tour.

Fox has produced consistent results lately on both sides of the pond and is the long-shot value bet this weekend.
