The penultimate PGA Tour tournament before the Masters next week has attracted a competitive field of the world's best golfers. Who will win the Valero Texas Open come Sunday?

Corey Conners returns to defend his title after a one-stroke victory over Sam Stevens in 2023 and will attempt to become the third player to win the tournament three times.

Past and present ajor winners in the lineup include Brian Harman, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Lucas Glover, Jimmy Walker, Stewart Cink, Padraig Harrington, Zach Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Jordan Spieth.

These are our four selections that could lift the trophy this weekend.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick had a solid beginning to the 2024 PGA Tour season, placing T14 at the Sentry, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T58 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T15 at the WM Phoenix Open.

Fitzpatrick's subsequent three starts lacked consistency, with results of MC at the Genesis Invitational, T21 at the Cognizant Classic and MC at the Arnold Palmer Invitational before returning to form with a credible 5th at the Players Championship.

The former US Open champion is debuting at the Valero Texas Open this weekend.

Fitzpatrick was back to his best in his previous start and will fancy his chances to come out on top at TPC San Antonio.

Byeong-Hun An

Byeong-Hun An started his new season on the PGA Tour in top form, placing 4th at the Sentry and T2 at the Sony Open in Hawaii before finishing T31 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and T66 at the WM Phoenix Open.

After those displays, Byeong-Hun An rediscovered his touch, placing T16 at the Genesis Invitational, T21 at the Cognizant Classic, T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and MC at the Players Championship.

The 32-year-old Korean golfer has featured four times at the Valero Texas Open, placing T40 in 2017, T7 in 2019, MC in 2021 and T6 in 2023.

Byeong-Hun An has produced three top-ten results this year and can secure victory in San Antonio if he can replicate those performances.

Billy Horschel

Billy Horschel lacked consistency on the PGA Tour at the start of the year, finishing T18 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, MC at the American Express, MC at the Farmers Insurance Open and T41 at the WM Phoenix Open.

However, Horschel has turned the corner since those results, placing T9 at the Cognizant Classic, MC at the Players Championship, T12 at the Valspar Chapions and T7 at the Texas Children's Houston Open last weekend.

The American golfer has a long history at TPC San Antonio, with results of T74 in 2011, 75th in 2012, T3 in 2013, MC in 2014, 3rd in 2015, T4 in 2016, MC in 2017, T11 in 2018 and MC in 2019.

Horschel comes into the Valero Texas Open in great shape and will be challenging for the title in Texas come Sunday.

Erik van Rooyen

Erik van Rooyen was in decent form at the beginning of the 2024 PGA Tour season, finishing T22 at the Sentry, T52 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T25 at the American Express, T22 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am before missing the cut at the WM Phoenix Open.

After those performances, Van Rooyen went up a notch, placing T8 at the Mexico Open, T2 at the Cognizant Classic and T25 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational before missing the cut at the Players Championship.

The 34-year-old South African has made two appearances at the Valero Texas Open, finishing T14 in 2021 before missing the cut in 2023.

Van Rooyen has done nothing wrong all year and should enter calculations this weekend.

Verdict

Fitzpatrick has all the credentials to emerge as the winner of the Valero Texas Open come Sunday.

Byeong-Hun An has the form to capture his maiden PGA Tour victory this weekend.

Horschel has come good lately and can win the title at TPC San Antonio.

Van Rooyen has been playing well this season and is the long-shot value bet in Texas.
