They failed to take their chance though, as they fell to a 5-4 defeat that has forced them to head back out on the road.
Detroit have already clinched one series on the road though, sweeping Houston in the Wild Card round.
The Tigers, who finished the regular season 86-78, travelled to Texas and took out the Astros in two games, winning 3-1 and 5-2.
Cleveland Guardians Form
Cleveland return home having kept their World Series dream alive in Detroit on Thursday night.
The Guardians drew first blood in this series, winning 7-0 at home, but then found themselves on the brink of elimination after losing 3-0 at home and 3-0 on the road.
They were able to fend off elimination in Game 4 though, as they downed Detroit 5-4 on the road to set up this Game 5 clash.
Cleveland will now look to avoid falling at the first hurdle, having earned themselves a bye for the Wild Card round.
The Guardians did that by compiling a 92-69 regular-season record that won them the American League Central title.
Verdict
Detroit blew their big chance on Thursday, but we remain confident about them advancing.
The big reason is Tarik Skubal is getting the start here, and not only has he been in excellent form this season, he has also shut out the Guardians in this series.
