Fils Returns To Top Twenty

Arthur Fils reached the Madrid quarterfinals after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets. He saved all five break points he faced and won 74% of his first-serve points.

This is an impressive run for the 21-year-old, who had never won a main-draw match in Madrid before this event. He has now extended his clay-court winning streak to eight matches, the longest streak of his career on this surface, after lifting the Barcelona title a few weeks ago.

Fils ended his 2025 season early after the clay swing and returned to the tour only in February this year. Since then, apart from an opening-round loss in Rotterdam, he has reached at least the quarterfinals in every event he has played, including the Doha final, the Miami semifinal, and the Indian Wells quarterfinal.

These results, along with his Madrid run this week, will take him back into the top 20 next week. He also recently ended a four-match losing streak in Masters quarterfinals with his run in Miami and will look to build on that again here.

Lehecka Keeps Masters Form Alive

Jiri Lehecka defeated world No. 9 Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets to reach the Madrid quarterfinals. He saved all four break points he faced and converted three of his four chances.

The Czech had registered three consecutive main-draw wins in a tour-level clay event only once before this week, and that also came in Madrid in 2024, when he reached the semifinals before retiring against Felix Auger-Aliassime. He now looks to repeat that run.

The 24-year-old lost his top-20 ranking earlier this year after failing to defend points during the Australian swing, but strong recent results such as the Miami final, the third round in Monte Carlo, and quarterfinals in Doha and Dubai have pushed him close to his career-high ranking of No. 13.

Lehecka has lost five of his last eight quarterfinals on tour, but at Masters level he holds a strong 2-1 record at this stage, including the Madrid semifinal in 2024 and the Miami final earlier this year.
