Kansas City Royals Form
Kansas City entered the series on the back of a victory, but in disappointing form with five defeats in their last eight games.
The Royals reeled off three straight wins in late June, backing up a 5-1 home win against Miami with 2-1 and 10-3 victories over Cleveland.
They then bounced back from a 7-2 loss to the Guardians with a 6-2 win in the series finale, only to go 1-2 in a three-game series with Tampa Bay.
Kansas City dropped the first game against the Rays, 5-1, and then failed to build on a 4-2 victory as they lost 10-8 in the last meeting.
The Royals went out on the road after that and lost 4-2 and 3-1 in Colorado, but they avoided being swept when they downed the Rockies 10-1.
St Louis Cardinals Form
St Louis came into this series on a strong run of form, having won six of their previous eight outings.
The Cardinals climbed above .500 in the second half of June and made a good start to July as they beat Pittsburgh 7-4 on the road.
They failed to take the second game with the Pirates, losing 5-4, but they hit back immediately to take the final game of the series, 3-2.
St Louis followed that up in the series opener in Washington, wining 7-6, only to again lose the second game of a series, this time 14-6 to the Nationals.
The Cardinals issued a strong response though as they won the final two games in the series, 8-3 and 6-0.
Verdict
Kansas City make for an appealing underdog against a St Louis starter who struggled in his most recent start.
