Alexandre Pantoja vs Kai Asakura Preview & Picks
Alexandre Pantoja is tipped to retain his flyweight title via decision.
Pantoja is the more rounded of the two and is the more experienced campaigner at flyweight.
Kai Asakura has not fought at this weight since 2017 and weight cuts get harder as fighters get older, so it could drain him here.
- Alexandre Pantoja is on a 6-fight win streak
- 4 of Alexandre Pantoja’s last 6 wins have been via decision
- Kai Asakura’s last defeat was by decision in December 2021
- Kai Asakura has not fought at flyweight since June 2017
Alexandre Pantoja Form
Alexandre Pantoja is the defending UFC flyweight champion with a career record of 28-5 (8 KOs, 10 Subs).
Pantoja is riding a six-fight win streak in response to his unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Askar Askarov back in July 2020.
The 34-year-old Brazilian rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over Manel Kape, and followed that up with a couple of wins that earned him Performance of the Night honours.
He first tapped out Brandon Royval in the second round, and then needed only 91 seconds to submit Alex Perez.
That earned Pantoja a shot at the flyweight championship in July 2023, and he took his big chance by beating Brandon Moreno via split decision.
‘The Cannibal’ made one defence of the title before the year was out, beating Brandon Royval via unanimous decision.
Pantoja then backed up that victory in May, as he beat Steve Erceg on points for his second successful outing as UFC flyweight champion.
Kai Asakura Form
Kai Asakura is unranked by the UFC, having only joined this year, and he takes a record of 21-4 (13 KOs, 3 Subs) into his debut fight.
Asakura compiled an 8-1 record before signing with Japan’s premier promotion, Rizin, back in 2017.
He quickly reeled off a bunch of wins to a earn a shot at the vacant bantamweight title in December 2019, but he came up short as he was knocked out by Manel Kape in the second round.
The 31-year-old Japanese fighter rebounded to win the belt in his next fight, knocking out Hiromasa Ougukubo in the first round, but he failed to make a successful defence.
Having beaten Shoji Maruyama by knockout in a non-title fight, he lost the belt to Kyoji Horiguchi as he was knocked out in one round.
Asakura’s quest to regain the title saw him enter the bantamweight Grand Prix, and after three straight wins sent him to the final, he dropped a decision to Hiromasa Ougukubo.
He has not lost since though, knocking out Yuki Motoya in the third before winning the vacant bantamweight title with a second-round stoppage of Juan Archuleta.
Verdict
Alexandre Pantoja is expected to make another successful defence on points.
His well-round game should allow him to control the championship rounds against Kai Asakura, who is making his US debut and has not fought at flyweight for over seven years.
