Jack Della Maddalena is the number one welterweight contender with a professional record of 18-3 (12 KOs, 2 Subs).
Della Maddalena debuted in the UFC in early 2022 after a successful appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, and he quickly made a splash with a string of stoppage wins.
The 29-year-old Australia knocked out Pete Rodriguez, Ramazan Emeev and Danny Roberts in the first round in his debut year with the promotion.
He then tapped out Randy Brown in the first round of his opening outing of 2023, before spending the rest of the year recording split decision wins over Bassil Hafez and Kevin Holland.
Della Maddalena then stepped up the level of opposition in his sole outing of 2024, securing a shot at the welterweight championship with a third-round knockout of Gilbert Burns.
He completed his rise to the top of the 170lb division in May 2025 as he beat Belal Muhammad by unanimous decision.
However, JDM’s reign proved to be brief as he dropped a decision to Islam Makhachev in his first defence last November.
Carlos Prates Riding Back-To-Back Wins
Carlos Prates is the number five ranked welterweight contender with a career record of 23-7 (18 KOs, 3 Subs).
Prates earned his place in the UFC with a successful showing on Dana White’s Contender Series, and wasted no time in making his presence felt.
He knocked out Trevin Giles in the second round in his debut outing in February 2024, and then followed that up with a first-round stoppage of Charles Radtke in the June.
The 32-year-old Brazilian then took out Jingliang Li with strikes in the second round and knocked out Neil Magny in the first to complete a successful year.
Prates’ win streak was ended in his first outing of 2025, as he lost a decision to Ian Machado Garry, but his response has been impressive.
He rebounded with a first-round knockout of Geoff Neal, and then backed that up with his biggest win to date as he stopped former champion Leon Edward with strikes in the second round last November.
Verdict
There is no doubting that Jack Della Maddalena is a skilled boxer, but standing up with a Carlos Prates could be his undoing here.
Prates combines a big reach advantage with fight-stopping power, and that combination can result in him scoring another huge knockout win in his quest for a title shot.
