They Rams won their final two games of the regular season, beating Wyoming 70-62 and Air Force 92-73 to finish the regular season with a 22-9 record.
They then made a successful start to the Mountain West Conference Championship tournament with a 72-62 win over San Jose in the first round.
Colorado State then downed Nevada 85-78 in the quarter-finals, but saw their quest for conference glory end in the semi-finals.
The Rams were beaten 74-61 by New Mexico State, who went on to clinch the Mountain West Conference Championship crown.
Virginia Form
Virginia come into this First Four game having put together a 23-10 record over the course of the season.
The Cavaliers stumbled late in the regular season as they lost four of their final seven games on the schedule.
They did wrap up the regular season with a victory though, beating Georgia Tech 72-57, and that sent them into the ACC Conference tournament on a positive note.
Virginia were given a bye through the first two rounds of the tournament, and when they did return to action they beat Boston College 66-60 in overtime in the quarter-finals.
The Cavaliers failed to make it to the final though, as they were beaten 73-65 in overtime by eventual winners NC State.
Verdict
Colorado State’s better offense is likely to be key here, even though they face a top defense.
