Matheus Nicolau vs Alex Perez Preview & Picks

Matheus Nicolau is tipped to win this flyweight fight.

Alex Perez has taken this at short notice so cardio could be an issue, meaning he needs to start fast.

Nicolau knows this, so we expect him to fight smart early and then take full advantage when Perez tires.

  • Matheus Nicolau has a 9-2 record in the UFC
  • Alex Perez is on a 3-fight losing run
  • Alex Perez has been stopped in 6 of his career defeats

Matheus Nicolau Form

Matheus Nicolau is the number five ranked flyweight contender with a professional record of 19-3 (5 KOs, 5 Subs) with 1 Draw.

Nicolau debuted in the UFC in November 2015 and won his first three fights before being knocked out by Dustin Ortiz in the first round.

He returned to the minor MMA scene after that defeat and recorded back-to-back victories, earning himself a second shot at the UFC.

The 31-year-old Brazilian edged Manel Kape via split decision in his first fight back in March 2021, and he followed that up later that year with a unanimous points win over Tim Elliott.

Nicolau then beat David Dvorak on points in his first outing of 2022, before ending the year with a second-round knockout of Matt Schnell.

He fought just once in 2023 however, and it proved to be a disappointing outing as he was knocked out by Brandon Royval in the first round.

Alex Perez Form

Alex Perez is the number eight ranked flyweight contender with a professional record of 24-8 (5 KOs, 7 Subs).

Perez earned his way into the UFC via an appearance on Dana White’s Contender Series, and he got off to a strong start with three straight wins.

His streak was halted in November 2018 when he was knocked out in the first round by Joseph Benavidez, but his response was strong.

The 32-year-old American recorded a unanimous decision win over Mark De La Rosa, and followed that up by submitting Jordan Espinosa in the first round.

Perez then earned a shot at the flyweight title by stopping Jussier Formiga with strikes in the first round.

However, he was unable to take his big chance as he was tapped out inside two minutes by Deiveson Figueiredo, and that proved to be the start of a three-fight skid.

When Perez returned to action he was submitted in the opening round by Alexandre Pantoja, and just last month he dropped a unanimous decision to Muhammad Mokaev.

Verdict

Alex Perez is a late stand-in who is on a three-fight skid and is facing a quick turnaround after his last loss.

This fight is Matheus Nicolau’s to lose and we do not expect that to happen on Saturday night.
