The Hurricanes, who finished second in the Metropolitan Division with a 52-23-7 record, downed New York's other team, the Islanders, in round one.
They quickly took control of the series as they won 3-1 and 5-3 at home, before heading out on the road to record a 3-2 victory.
Carolina passed up on the chance to sweep the Islanders as they lost 3-2 in overtime in Game 4, but they issued an immediate response by clinching with a 6-3 win at home.
The Hurricanes failed to back that up in the first game of this series though, as they were beaten 4-3 by the Rangers on Sunday.

New York go into the second game of this series boasting a perfect postseason record thanks to five consecutive wins.
The Rangers, who went 55-23-4 in the regular season to finish top of the Metropolitan Division, made light work of Washington in the first round.

New York then ruthlessly wrapped up the series in the nation's capital, as they beat the Nationals 3-1 and 4-2 to complete a series sweep.
The Rangers then took early control of this series with Carolina, beating the Hurricanes 4-3 in the series opener on Sunday.

New York are on a red-hot run and have been a dominant force on the home ice this season.
