Florida Panthers Form

Florida go into the second game of the Stanley Cup Finals have lost for the sixth time in 18 postseason outings.

The Panthers engaged in a seven-goal thriller with the Oilers in Game 1, but ultimately came up short as they lost 4-3 in overtime in Edmonton.

They entered the Stanley Cup Finals having won 12 of their 17 playoff games to eliminate Tampa Bay, Toronto and Carolina.

Florida made a fast start to the playoffs as they won 6-2 and 2-0 at Tampa Bay, before responding to a 5-1 defeat with series-clinching 4-2 and 6-3 wins over the Lightning.

The Panthers failed to repeat that fast start in the second round as they travelled to Toronto and lost 5-4 and 4-3 to the Maple Leafs.

They rebounded at home though, winning 5-4 in overtime and 2-0 in regulation, before edging ahead in the series for the first time with a 6-1 victory on the road.

Florida failed to clinch at home, losing 2-0 to the Maple Leafs, but they held their nerve in Game 7 as they went back out on the road to win 6-1 in Toronto.

The Panthers backed up that victory as they raced out to a three-game lead in the Eastern Conference Finals, reeling off 5-2 and 5-0 victories in Carolina, before returning home to down the Hurricanes 6-2.

They missed out on a series sweep as they were beaten 3-0 in Game 4, but they put that behind them when they headed back to Carolina to clinch the series with a 5-3 victory.

Edmonton Oilers Form

Edmonton enter Game 2 looking to double their lead before the Stanley Cup Finals heads to Florida next week.

The Oilers trailed after the first period of the series opener with Florida, but they rallied over the next couple and went on to win the game 4-3 in overtime.

They went into this Stanley Cup Finals rematch with the Panthers having gone 12-4 while eliminating Los Angeles, Vegas and Dallas.

Edmonton made a rough start as they dropped back-to-back games in Los Angeles, 6-5 and 6-2, but they responded by winning the next four meetings to advance, taking them 7-4, 4-3 (OT), 3-1 and 6-4.

The Oilers kept that run going as they made a much stronger start to the second round, downing Vegas 4-2 in regulation and 5-4 in overtime on the road.

They then responded to a 4-3 home loss with a 3-0 victory, before heading back to ‘Sin City’ to clinch the series with a 1-0 overtime win.

Edmonton lost their opening game of the Western Conference Finals series with Dallas, 6-3, but once again responded strongly to a postseason setback.

The Oilers levelled the series with a 3-0 victory in Texas, before heading back home to take control with 6-1 and 4-1 victories at Rogers Place.

That gave them the chance to clinch on the road in Game 5, and they did just that as they downed the Stars 6-3 to set up this rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals.

Verdict

Edmonton made hard work of Game 1, but ultimately they got the job done to take a 1-0 series lead.

The Oilers are rolling at home in the postseason and have now won three of the last four home meetings with Florida in the NHL's biggest series, so we are sticking with them in Game 2.
