However, they failed to make a dent in the Panthers on the road, losing 5-4 in overtime and 2-0 in regulation.
Toronto then lost 6-1 at home to Florida on Wednesday night, leaving them on the brink of elimination.
The Maple Leafs went 52-26-4 in the regular season to earn their place in the playoffs, and won a six-game series with Ottawa in the opening round of the postseason.
Florida Panthers Form
Florida return home with the opportunity to wrap up this series, having secured their third straight win last time out.
The Panthers failed to take away Toronto’s home advantage as they were beaten in the first two games on the road, 5-4 and 4-3.
They rallied at home though, and knotted up the series with a 5-4 overtime success and a 2-0 victory in regulation.
Florida then backed that up with a 6-1 win in Toronto on Wednesday, giving themselves the chance to close out this series on the home ice on Friday.
The Panthers went 47-31-4 in the regular season to seal a return to the playoffs, and the defending champions opened with a 4-1 series win over Tampa Bay.
Verdict
Florida have taken a firm grip of this series and it is tough to see them loosening it at home.
The Panthers are scoring for fun and have all of the momentum, so we expect them to wrap up this series and avoid another trip to Toronto.
