Group B Preview - Canada, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar

Group B looks like one of the tougher sections to call, with Switzerland heading the market at 1.9 and hosts Canada expected to run them close at 3.5.

Surprise qualifiers Bosnia and Herzegovina are also in contention at 3.6 odds to win the section, after coming through a dramatic playoff against Italy, while Qatar are the clear outsiders at 34.0.

Let’s take a closer look at Group B.

Canada

  • FIFA Ranking: 30
  • Manager: Jesse Marsch
  • Best Odds to Win Group B: 3.5

A solid Canadian side have impressed under Jesse Marsch and should view this as a major opportunity on home soil.

Marsch’s side are built around pressing, pace and vertical attacks, with Alphonso Davies, Tajon Buchanan and Jonathan David giving them a genuine threat, particularly in transitions.

In the absence of a deep squad, injury issues are a concern with vital performers Davies, Alistair Johnston, Moise Bombito and Stephen Eustaquio all dealing with fitness worries in recent weeks. Discipline also needs to improve after three red cards in their last five international fixtures.

Still, if Canada get their strongest XI fit, they have the athleticism, home support and attacking weapons to come out on top in a tight section.

Switzerland

  • FIFA Ranking: 19
  • Manager: Murat Yakin
  • Best Odds to Win Group B: 1.9

Switzerland are viewed as the strongest team in Group B, but look a little short to back at just 1.9 to win the section.

Murat Yakin’s side are consistent, experienced and difficult to beat, securing qualification with relative ease, remaining unbeaten, and conceding just two goals.

Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka remains a key figure in midfield, while Gregor Kobel, Manuel Akanji and Fabian Schar provide a strong defensive spine. Dan Ndoye and Breel Embolo offer pace and physicality in attack that should prove vital in overcoming resolute opponents Bosnia and Qatar.

The Swiss should qualify in one of the two automatic spots, but Canada’s home advantage and bigger price make the hosts the more attractive betting option.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • FIFA Ranking: 65
  • Manager: Sergej Barbarez
  • Best Odds to Win Group B: 3.6

Returning to the World Cup for only the second time, Bosnia and Herzegovina are dangerous outsiders and should not be dismissed.

The Eastern Europeans secured unlikely qualification through the playoff route, overcoming both Wales and Italy on penalties. Sergej Barbarez’s underrated side proved tough to beat throughout the qualification campaign, losing just one of their ten internationals.

While short on star names, the ageless Edin Dzeko remains the attacking reference point, with Stuttgart forward Ermedin Demirovic also likely to feature in the Bosnian forward line.

Bosnia are physical, direct and comfortable defending deep before hitting teams on the counter-attack. Their lack of depth may count against them, but they are capable of qualifying, either automatically or as one of the best third-placed sides.

Qatar

  • FIFA Ranking: 55
  • Manager: Julen Lopetegui
  • Best Odds to Win Group B: 34.0

Qatar look the weakest side in Group B, despite being ranked higher than European rivals Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Asians, World Cup hosts in 2022, secured direct qualification for the competition for the first time, with a controversial 2-1 win against the UAE last year.

Qatar’s preparation has been far from ideal, tough, with planned March friendlies against Serbia and Argentina cancelled. Their last competitive action in the Arab Cup proved disappointing, with defeats to Palestine and Tunisia and a draw with Syria.

Experienced Spanish boss Julen Lopetegui should make them more organised, but their largely domestic-based squad is likely to struggle in Group B.
