World Cup 2026 Group D Preview & Picks - Turks and US in Fight to Win Group D

Group D Preview - USA, Turkiye, Paraguay and Australia
Group D looks wide open, with USA leading the market as 2.35 favourites ahead of Turkiye at 2.8, Paraguay at 4.75 and Australia at 7.5.
Home advantage could be decisive, but any of these four nations could feasibly finish as section winners. One of three host nations this summer, the USA have struggled to find consistency under Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino, but can gain momentum from a winnable first fixture against Paraguay.
Turkiye bring plenty of attacking quality, while Paraguay are likely to present a stiff test after a strong performance in the CONMEBOL qualification.
Completing the section, Australia have enough experience and physicality to make life difficult for anyone in Group D.
Let’s take a closer look at the fourth group in the 2026 World Cup.
USA
- FIFA Ranking: 16
- Manager: Mauricio Pochettino
- Odds to Win Group D: 2.35
The USA are narrow favourites to win Group D, but they come into the World Cup with plenty of questions to answer after a mixed run of form over the past year.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffered damaging friendly defeats against Belgium and Portugal in March, losing 5-2 and 2-0, with defensive vulnerabilities and a lack of continuity in formation cited as reasons for the States’ lacklustre performances.
Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie highlight the quality available to Pochettino. Yet despite arguably boasting the most talented US squad in history, the former Spurs boss has struggled to find consistency in results or unite a sceptical fan base ahead of America’s second time hosting the competition.
Still, home advantage should matter. A win against Paraguay in their June 14th opener would go a long way to advancing their case, and with boisterous home support behind them, the States can progress as Group D winners.
Turkiye
- FIFA Ranking: 22
- Manager: Vincenzo Montella
- Odds to Win Group D: 2.8
Turkiye return to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they famously secured a third-place finish in Japan and South Korea.
Vincenzo Montella’s side came through the UEFA playoffs with back-to-back 1-0 wins against Romania and Kosovo, and they will fancy their chances of coming through Group D.
A solid set of results in their qualification campaign saw Turkey win six and lose just one of eight qualifying fixtures.
Strong in the forward areas, Inter playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu provides control and set-piece quality in midfield, while Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz offer plenty of creativity and flair from the flanks.
Less impressive defensively, the Turks leaked 12 goals in six World Cup qualifiers before tightening up in their playoff wins against Romania and Kosovo.
While potentially vulnerable in transition, Montella’s men have enough individual quality to beat any side in this group, and look the best value choice to win Group D.
Paraguay
- FIFA Ranking: 40
- Manager: Gustavo Alfaro
- Odds to Win Group D: 4.75
Paraguay return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010, and they look like dangerous outsiders in a competitive section.
Gustavo Alfaro has built a disciplined, awkward and defensively strong side. Paraguay scored just 14 goals in 18 CONMEBOL qualifiers, the lowest total of any automatic South American qualifier, but conceded only ten goals.
Impressive wins against both Argentina and Brazil in their World Cup qualification campaign will give La Albirroja plenty of confidence in the Americas.
Former Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron remains their main attacking outlet, while Julio Enciso, Antonio Sanabria and Diego Gomez add pace and power in the final third.
The South American qualifiers are unlikely to dominate possession, but their defensive structure and counter-attacking style could make them very competitive in an evenly balanced section.
Australia

- Manager: Tony Popovic
- Odds to Win Group D: 7.5
Returning for a sixth successive FIFA World Cup appearance, Australia are the outsiders in Group D, but they possess enough experience and organisation to stay competitive.
The Socceroos qualified directly from the AFC third round, finishing second behind Japan, while recent friendly wins against Curacao (5-1) and Cameroon should add to their confidence.
After consecutive exits in the first round between 2010 and 2018, the Aussies reached the round of sixteen in Qatar four years ago, narrowly failing to eventual tournament winners Argentina.
Tony Popovic’s side are expected to operate in a 3-4-2-1 shape and, while devoid of star names, have enough wherewithal to make life difficult for their Group D rivals.
Nestory Irankunda gives Australia pace and unpredictability in the final third, but Riley McGree’s tournament-ending hamstring injury is a major blow.
While sure to be competitive, a lack of quality in the attacking areas could prove the Australians' undoing in Group D.
