Group F Preview - Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

Group F could prove one of the most competitive sections at the 2026 World Cup, with the Netherlands leading the Group Winners market at a relatively short 1.72.

A dangerous Japanese side are second-favourites at 4.0, with Sweden priced at 5.50 and African qualifiers Tunisia completing the group as 8.0 outsiders.

While the Dutch are fancied to emerge as group winners, a talented and well-organised Japanese side look capable of mounting a serious challenge for top spot.

Sweden and Tunisia complete a section that should prove one of the tightest this summer.

Netherlands

  • FIFA Ranking: 7
  • Manager: Ronald Koeman
  • Odds to Win Group F: 1.72

The Netherlands are favourites to win Group F, but their price looks a little short in a competitive section.

Ronald Koeman’s side bring plenty of tournament pedigree and a strong defensive core, with Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Jurrien Timber and Nathan Ake giving the Dutch excellent depth at the back.

Qualification for a 12th World Cup finals appearance was secured with relative ease. The Dutch picked up six wins, finishing three points clear of Poland, while remaining unbeaten in an eight-game campaign.

A recent 2-1 win against an in-form Norway offered further encouragement, while they remain unbeaten in 14 internationals since October 2024.

Past finals appearances suggest the Netherlands will be there or thereabouts again this summer. The European heavyweights reached the quarter-finals or better in each of their last three World Cup appearances, and in seven of nine since 1974.

Frenkie de Jong, Tijjani Reijnders and Ryan Gravenberch provide quality and control in midfield, while Cody Gakpo remains their most reliable attacking outlet.

All-time top scorer Memphis Depay’s fitness remains a concern, and the Dutch still need to settle the central striker issue going into the tournament. Wout Weghorst has again been included despite his advancing years.

While likely to emerge in one of two automatic qualification places, a tough opener against Japan is sure to prove crucial in the battle for top spot.

Japan

  • FIFA Ranking: 18
  • Manager: Hajime Moriyasu
  • Odds to Win Group F: 4.0

Japan look the value pick to win Group F after a strong run of form over the past year.

Hajime Moriyasu’s side beat Scotland 1-0 in Glasgow in March before becoming the first Asian nation to defeat England, winning by the same scoreline at Wembley. Those results reinforced their status as far more than tournament outsiders.

Set for a seventh consecutive World Cup appearance, Japan have reached the round of 16 at four previous finals, including Qatar four years ago, when the Blue Samurai surprisingly topped a tough group featuring Germany and Spain.

Japan are expected to operate in a 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 shape, built around high pressing, collective movement and rapid transitions.

Takefusa Kubo provides creativity, while in-form Celtic forward Daizen Maeda is expected to lead the line in the absence of Brighton forward Kaoru Mitoma.

Mitoma’s injury is a blow, but Japan have enough structure, discipline and counter-attacking quality to emerge as surprise group winners again this summer.

Sweden

  • FIFA Ranking: 38
  • Manager: Graham Potter
  • Odds to Win Group F: 5.5

Sweden arrive at the World Cup after a remarkable qualification campaign. They finished bottom of their qualifying group without winning a game, changed manager, then reached the finals through the Nations League playoff route.

English boss Graham Potter took charge in October 2025 and quickly weaved his magic, with Sweden beating Ukraine 3-1 before edging Poland with a dramatic 3-2 win in the playoff final.

Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres was the hero, scoring a hat-trick against Ukraine before netting the late winner against Poland. Fellow Premier League forwards Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga add further attacking threat to the Swedish forward line.

Blessed with plenty of talent in the final third, the Swedes should prove dangerous opponents in Group F, but defensive fragility may hold them back against the in-form Dutch and Japanese challenge.

A third-place finish seems likely, but Potter’s boys are likely to require victory from their opening fixture against Tunisia on June 15th if they are to move beyond the group phase.

Tunisia

  • FIFA Ranking: 44
  • Manager: Sabri Lamouchi
  • Odds to Win Group F: 8.0

Tunisia face a daunting challenge in Group F, but the African qualifiers are unlikely to prove soft opponents for any of their rivals in the section.

The Carthage Eagles are appearing at a third successive World Cup and boast a solid defence that will be required if they are to upset the odds in the Americas.

An outstanding qualification campaign saw Tunisia finish top of their section, with only two points dropped in a ten-game section. Impressively, Sabri Lamouchi’s men kept clean sheets in all ten fixtures, finishing 13 points clear of Namibia.

March friendly results were decent with a 1-0 win against Haiti and a 0-0 draw against Canada, but a lack of top talent in the final third could prove the biggest issue. Experienced defender Ali Abdi is the leading scorer in the squad with just seven international goals.

Ellyes Skhiri gives Tunisia further experience and defensive control in midfield, while British-based duo Hannibal Mejbri and Sebastian Tounekti are capable but inconsistent performers.

In such a tough section, a bottom-placed finish seems likely. Tunisia were eliminated at the first round stage in all six previous appearances, with only three wins recorded in 18 World Cup finals fixtures.
