Group A Preview - Mexico, Czechia, South Korea and South Africa

Despite a poor build-up, Mexico’s home advantage could prove crucial in a competitive Group A featuring Czechia, South Korea and South Africa.

The hosts head the group-winner market at 2.0, with Czechia at 3.25 and South Korea at 4.33, both capable of challenging. South Africa are the outsiders at 8.0, but they should not be completely dismissed after topping their CAF qualifying group and finishing fourth at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mexico open their 2026 World Cup campaign against South Africa at the Azteca on June 11, while South Korea face Czechia on the same day in a fixture that could prove crucial in the race for second spot.

Mexico

  • FIFA Ranking: 15
  • Manager: Javier Aguirre
  • Odds to Win Group A: 2.0

Mexico may not arrive in perfect shape, but home advantage gives them a clear route to winning Group A.

Javier Aguirre’s side have enjoyed success in recent years, after back-to-back CONCACAF Gold Cup titles in 2023 and 2025, while recent draws against Portugal and Belgium showed they can compete against top-level opposition.

Despite a lack of elite individual talent, Mexico are regular features in the World Cup knockout phase. Remarkably, El Tri were eliminated at the round-of-16 stage in seven successive finals from 1994 to 2018, before suffering a group-stage exit in Qatar four years ago.

Aguirre’s side are expected to operate with a fluid 4-3-3 system, spearheaded by Fulham forward Raul Jimenez. Julian Quinones, Roberto Alvarado and Hirving Lozano should provide a decent level of creative support from the flanks.

Defensive vulnerabilities remain an issue, but the Azteca factor makes Mexico the team to beat in Group A.

Czechia

  • FIFA Ranking: 41
  • Manager: Miroslav Koubek
  • Best Odds to Win Group A: 3.25

European qualifiers, Czechia, look the biggest threat to Mexico in a competitive Group A.

Miroslav Koubek's men upset the odds to come through the playoffs in March, beating Ireland and Denmark on penalties following dramatic 2-2 draws in both fixtures.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick remains their main attacking weapon, while West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek is still a vital cog in the Czech midfield. Despite a lack of emerging talent, the Europeans have remained tough-to-beat, losing just two of their last 17 international fixtures.

Czechia scored more set-piece goals than any European nation during the 2026 qualifying process, and that weapon could prove vital in a likely tight and competitive section.

Their opener against South Korea could decide whether they challenge for top spot or are forced into a battle to secure one of the two automatic qualification places.

South Korea

  • FIFA Ranking: 23
  • Manager: Hong Myung-Bo
  • Best Odds to Win Group A: 4.33

An experienced South Korean side have the individual quality to win Group A, but defensive concerns could prove costly in an evenly-balanced section.

US-based captain Son Heung-min remains the lynchpin and, despite his advancing years, arrives at the tournament on the back of a strong campaign with LAFC.

Friendly defeats against Austria (1-0) and Ivory Coast (4-0) in March offered some cause for concern, while a 5-0 defeat against Brazil last year also exposed some major defensive weaknesses.

Hong Myung-Bo’s 3-4-2-1 system makes the Asians an intriguing side to watch, but they will need to be at their best if they are to finish in the top two qualifying positions.

South Africa

  • FIFA Ranking: 60
  • Manager: Hugo Broos
  • Best Odds to Win Group A: 8.0

Completing the section, African qualifiers South Africa are the outsiders in Group A, but they have enough organisation and defensive discipline to remain competitive.

An impressive qualification campaign saw Bafana Bafana top Group C in CAF qualifying ahead of Nigeria and Benin. A hard-fought 1-1 draw in Nigeria proved crucial as South Africa finished the campaign with 18 points, one ahead of a dangerous Super Eagles side.

Hugo Broos has built a solid and tough-to-beat unit, led by Ronwen Williams in goal, Teboho Mokoena in midfield and Lyle Foster as the attacking focal point.

Among the biggest concerns is their lack of experience at this level. South Africa are competing at only their second World Cup finals after hosting the tournament in 2010.

While unlikely to be overwhelmed, Broos’s side could struggle to make a serious impact and look most likely to finish bottom of the section.
