Brandon Nakashima arrives in Montreal full of confidence after a string of impressive performances in recent weeks, highlighted by his run to the Washington semifinal. The American has been playing with consistency and looks well settled on North American hard courts.

Daniel Altmaier is capable of making this competitive, but he faces a difficult task against an opponent carrying so much momentum.

Nakashima Pushes To Continue His Hard-Court Form

  • Nakashima has a 1–1 record in Montreal opening-round matches.
  • He has a 14–6 record against players outside the Top 50 in 2026.
  • Altmaier has not registered multiple wins at a Masters event in 2026.
  • He has a 4–10 record against Top 50 players.

Brandon Nakashima Builds on Recent Success

After struggling during the clay swing, Brandon Nakashima rediscovered his best form on grass and has carried that momentum into the hard-court season, reaching the semifinals at both Queen's Club and Washington.

Overall, the American has played 15 tournaments this season and cleared the opening-round hurdle in 12 of them. His other standout results include a runner-up finish in Brisbane and a semifinal appearance in Acapulco, underlining his consistency on hard courts.

This is Nakashima's third appearance in Montreal. He suffered a first-round exit in 2022 before reaching the third round in 2024.

Daniel Altmaier Continues His Fightback

Daniel Altmaier survived a thrilling first-round battle against Aleksandar Vukic in Montreal, winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. The German squandered a 4-2 lead in the opening set and also trailed by a break in the second before producing an impressive comeback.

Altmaier began the season with an eight-match losing streak but has gradually found his rhythm since March. He has reached three quarterfinals this season, including a semifinal run in Halle. However, he has still struggled for consistency, failing to register multiple main-draw wins in six of his last seven tournaments.

Before this week, Altmaier had played five Masters 1000 events this season and managed just one main-draw victory. He will now be looking to build on his opening-round success in Montreal.

Verdict

Altmaier has enough quality to keep the sets close and could force at least one tiebreak, but Nakashima's current form gives him the edge. Backing Brandon Nakashima to win in straight sets and a tiebreak to be played in the match and over 10.5 games in the first set are attractive options.
