Joao Fonseca’s performance against Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells last week was highly impressive, and if he maintains that level, he could pose a solid challenge here against Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz Operates On Different Level

  • Carlos Alcaraz is 41–1 vs outside Top 20 players in the last 12 months.
  • He reached at least the quarterfinal in three of five Miami appearances.
  • Joao Fonseca is 3–4 in second-round matches at Masters events.
  • He has a 1–3 career record vs Top 10 players.

Alcaraz Targets Deep Run

Carlos Alcaraz saw his 17-match winning streak end in Indian Wells, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal. It was his second semifinal loss on tour, both coming at this event.

Despite that setback, it has been the best start to a season in his career. He won his maiden Australian Open title and followed it up with another title in Doha.

Over the past three years, Alcaraz has suffered only three opening-round exits, all at Masters events, Cincinnati 2024 and Miami and Paris in 2025.

He has played Miami five times, with two opening-round exits in 2021 and 2025. In his other appearances, he reached at least the quarterfinal, including winning the title in 2022.

Fonseca Advances With Confidence

Joao Fonseca defeated Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the second round in Miami. He is now one win away from matching his result from last year.

The Brazilian achieved his best Masters result here previously, reaching the fourth round with wins over Karen Khachanov and Tommy Paul before losing to Jannik Sinner.

This victory is a timely boost after managing just one win across his previous three events. He will look to build momentum from here.

Fonseca has played nine Masters events, registering multiple wins three times. All of those runs came in North America, Miami and Cincinnati in 2025, and Indian Wells last year.

Fonseca showed a very high level against Sinner at Indian Wells, and if he brings anything close to that here, over 20.5 total games becomes a strong betting angle.
