Sonego Returns With Hard Fought Win

Lorenzo Sonego kickstarted his clay season with a hard-fought 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win over Pedro Martinez in Barcelona. He nearly let slip a 3-1 lead in the decider but raised his level in key moments.

The Italian will be relieved with the result as it was his first match since suffering a wrist injury during the Australian Open, which sidelined him for two months.

Despite the break, his ranking has remained relatively stable as he does not have many points to defend in the coming weeks until Wimbledon.

Last season on clay, he struggled, winning just one main-draw match across five events, with his best result being the second round in Madrid. He now aims for his first clay-court quarterfinal since Umag 2024.

Rublev Starts Campaign With Victory

Andrey Rublev moved into the second round with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mariano Navone. He was broken three times but responded strongly by breaking serve five times.

This win will boost his confidence after a poor run of form, having lost four of his last five matches, including early exits at Indian Wells and Miami.

Despite the recent slump, Rublev had a solid start to the season with semifinal runs in Hong Kong, Doha, and Dubai, along with a third-round appearance at the Australian Open.

On clay, he initially struggled last season, failing to win multiple matches in his first four events, but later improved with a final in Hamburg and a fourth-round run at the French Open.

Verdict

Given Lorenzo Sonego’s lack of match practice, this is a good opportunity for Rublev to take control. Rublev to win in straight sets and Rublev -3.5 games handicap both make solid sense in this matchup.
