Frances Tiafoe has been the more encouraging performer this season, while Tommy Paul has struggled with fitness and consistency in the early part of 2026. Add to that Tiafoe’s excellent record in Houston, reaching at least the final in each of the last three editions, and he looks well positioned here.

Clay Edge Favors Tiafoe

  • Tommy Paul has lost five of his last six semifinals on tour.
  • He has a 5–1 record vs compatriots in 2026.
  • Frances Tiafoe is 5–0 in tour-level clay semifinals.

Paul Eyes First Clay Final

Tommy Paul reached the semifinal in Houston with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry. With this victory, he matched his result from last year at this event.

The American played a limited schedule after last year’s clay season due to injury, which pushed him outside the top 20 in the rankings.

He has responded well this season, reaching the final in Delray Beach, the semifinal in Adelaide, the fourth round of the Australian Open, and the quarterfinal in Miami.

Paul holds an 8-12 record in tour-level semifinals. He recently ended a five-match losing streak at this stage by reaching the Delray Beach final and is now aiming for his first semifinal win on clay.

Tiafoe Keeps Houston Dominance Alive

Frances Tiafoe defeated Alexei Popyrin 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the semifinal in Houston. He saved three of four break points and survived a match point in the tiebreak.

This is his fourth consecutive semifinal appearance in Houston. He has converted each of his previous three into finals, winning the title in 2023 and finishing runner-up in 2024 and 2025.

Tiafoe was close to breaking into the top 10 last year, but a dip in results pushed him outside the top 30. He has since regained form this season to climb back into the top 20.

He holds an 11-9 record in tour-level semifinals and is a perfect 5-0 on clay at this stage, including a 3-0 record in Houston.

Verdict

With the better form and strong history at this venue, Tiafoe to win stands out, while Tiafoe to win in straight sets offers an added layer of value at bigger odds.
