DC secure their place in the postseason by putting together a 6-4 record to finish second in the XFL Conference.
The Defenders suffered a big setback as they lost their head coach on the eve of the season, but they responded to that adversity in style.
They opened the season with an 18-11 upset of defending champions Birmingham, before beating Memphis 17-12 and St Louis 27-15.
DC lost two of the next three to cool off, sandwiching a 37-33 victory in Arlington with a 24-18 defeat to San Antonio and a 38-14 loss in Michigan.
The Defenders steadied the ship by beating San Antonio 32-24 and Arlington 33-30, only to close out the regular season losing 24-21 at Houston and 13-8 at home to St Louis.

St Louis booked their spot in the XFL Conference Championship by compiling a league-best 8-2 record to finish top of the standings.
The Battlehawks opened the season with back-to-back victories, blowing out Houston on the road, 31-6, before downing San Antonio 26-9 in their home opener.
They cooled off over the next two games, losing 27-15 to DC and 30-15 at Arlington, but they would not lose again during the regular season.
St Louis rebounded at home with a 32-27 win over Michigan and a 12-6 success against Arlington, and backed up those victories with a 19-9 win in Memphis.
The Battlehawks then knocked off defending champion Birmingham, 29-28, before ending the regular season with a 39-13 blowout of San Antonio and a 13-8 victory over DC.
Verdict
St Louis’ defense has been considerably better than DC’s over the course of the season.
That is likely to be the decisive factor here, as the Battlehawks delight the home fans with a postseason victory over the Defenders.
