Group E Preview - Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Curacao

Four-time World Cup winners Germany are the clear favourites to win Group E, with Julian Nagelsmann’s side expected to finish ahead of Ecuador, Ivory Coast and World Cup debutants Curacao.

The Germans are priced around 1.33 to top the section, with Ecuador next in the market at 5.0 and Ivory Coast available at 9.0. Curacao - the smallest nation to ever qualify for the competition - are huge outsiders at 151.0.

While the European heavyweights should have too much quality for this section, the race for second looks competitive.

Let’s look at Group E.

Germany

  • FIFA Ranking: 10
  • Manager: Julian Nagelsmann
  • Odds to Win Group E: 1.33

Germany arrive in the Americas as short-priced favourites to win Group E, although recent World Cup history offers a warning.

The four-time winners crashed out in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, but Julian Nagelsmann’s men would need to seriously underperform to suffer a similar fate this summer.

Germany have a balanced squad built around established star names including Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, Joshua Kimmich and Kai Havertz. Legendary No. 1 Manuel Neuer has also reversed his international retirement and been named first-choice goalkeeper for the tournament, adding vast experience to the spine of the side.

Qualification for this summer’s competition proved relatively straightforward despite a shock defeat against Slovakia in Bratislava. Die Mannschaft responded with five successive wins and just one goal conceded as they finished three points clear of the Slovaks in Group A.

With Curacao first up, Germany should make a winning start before tougher tests against Ivory Coast and Ecuador lie in store.

Perhaps underrated at 16.0 to go all the way this summer, Germany look like dangerous dark horses in a tournament with no standout favourite.

Given their experience, attacking quality and favourable opening fixture against Curacao, it would come as a major surprise if the Germans failed to finish as Group E winners.

Ecuador

  • FIFA Ranking: 23
  • Manager: Sebastian Beccacece
  • Odds to Win Group E: 5.0

Ecuador look like Germany’s biggest threat in Group E and, given recent form, are likely to prove a hard team to beat for anyone in the Americas.

Sebastian Beccacece’s side qualified with relative ease, finishing runners-up in the CONMEBOL qualifying campaign despite a three-point deduction. Ecuador won eight and lost just two of their 18 qualifiers, while they were especially impressive defensively, conceding only five goals across the entire campaign.

Recent results have been remarkably consistent, but turning draws into wins is the priority for La Tri. Unbeaten in their last 17 matches, nine of their 11 most recent international matches finished deadlocked.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo gives Ecuador world-class quality in the middle of the park, while Piero Hincapie, Willian Pacho and Pervis Estupinan provide pace and strength in what is a well-balanced defensive unit.

The biggest concern is their attacking output, with Ecuador scoring only 14 goals during the qualifying campaign.

Still, their defensive base makes them difficult to beat, and they look more likely than Ivory Coast to secure automatic qualification from Group E.

Ivory Coast

  • FIFA Ranking: 34
  • Manager: Emerse Fae
  • Odds to Win Group E: 9.0

Ivory Coast return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 and look like lively outsiders in Group E.

The 2023 AFCON winners came through qualification impressively, picking up eight wins while drawing just two of ten qualifiers. Remarkably, a watertight defence kept clean sheets in all ten fixtures.

Past performances at the World Cup offer less encouragement. Ivory Coast suffered first-round exits in three previous appearances between 2006 and 2014. The Ivorians failed to qualify in both 2018 and 2022.

Still, with one win picked up in each of those three previous appearances, the Ivorians should prove competitive in Group E, with victories against Curacao and Ecuador certainly achievable.

Recent form has been solid, with six wins and just one defeat recorded in eight internationals since last November. A 4-0 win against South Korea was perhaps flattering, but the Elephants proved deserved winners in a drab encounter against Scotland in March.

Emerse Fae’s side have the pace and power to prove dangerous opponents in Group E, with their opening fixture against Ecuador on June likely to prove decisive in the battle for a top-two finish.

Curacao

  • FIFA Ranking: 82
  • Manager: Dick Advocaat
  • Odds to Win Group E: 151.0

Curacao make history as the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, but their task in Group E is particularly daunting.

The Caribbean side topped their Concacaf qualifying section and deserve huge credit for earning their place. While they are viewed as one of the main beneficiaries of the tournament’s expansion and the three extra places available for Concacaf nations, Curacao proved their merit by finishing ahead of Jamaica to secure qualification for the first time.

Still, the step-up in class against Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast is likely to prove a bridge too far for the tiny island with a population of just 158000.

The Blue Wave struggled in recent friendlies, with a surprise 2-0 loss to China before being overwhelmed in a 5-1 defeat to Australia, results that underscored the scale of the task facing them in Group E.

Those setbacks were followed by another change in the Curacao coaching staff. Former boss Dick Advocaat stepped down in early 2026 to care for his seriously ill daughter, with Fred Rutten appointed as his replacement ahead of the tournament.

Following those poor results under Rutten in March, and with his daughter’s condition having improved, Advocaat has since returned to guide Curacao into their first-ever World Cup finals appearance.

The veteran Dutch coach made the Caribbean side difficult to beat in his previous run in charge. Before their March friendly defeats, Curacao had lost just one of 11 matches across a 12-month period under Advocaat, showing the organisation and resilience that helped them secure a historic place at the tournament.

The former Rangers boss's return as manager gives Curacao an experienced figurehead, with the 78-year-old becoming the oldest head coach in World Cup history.

Still, picking up any points at this summer’s finals should be the main target for a nation already making history simply by reaching the tournament. The Caribbean nation should be organised and competitive in spells, but the jump in class is severe.

Ultimately, avoiding the bottom spot would be a major achievement.
