Former champion Phil Davis can spoil Yoel Romero’s long-awaited Bellator debut.

Phil Davis Form

Phil Davis is a former light-heavyweight champion with a 9-3 record since signing with Bellator.

‘Mr Wonderful’ made an immediate splash in Bellator, winning the light-heavyweight grand prix.

That earned him a title shot and he successfully dethroned Liam McGeary via unanimous decision.

Davis lost the title in his first defence though, dropping a split decision to Ryan Bader.

He rebounded by besting Leonardo Leite over three rounds before knocking out Linton Vassell with a head kick in the third.

His momentum stalled with a split decision lost to Vadim Nemkov, but he rebounded with a three-fight win streak.

Stoppage wins over McGeary and Karl Albrektsson were followed up by a split decision win over Lyoto Machida.

That earned him a crack at the light-heavyweight title, but once again he dropped a decision to Nemkov.

April’s defeat has left Davis with a 22-6, 1 No Contest record. He has six knockout wins and five submission victories. His six career losses have all been via decision.

Yoel Romero Form

Yoel Romero is making his Bellator debut and will be looking to halt a poor run of form.

Romero established himself as one of the UFC’s premier middleweights with an eight-fight win streak between 2013 and 2016.

Knockout wins over Lyoto Machida and Chris Widman, as well as a decision win over Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza, earned him an interim title shot in 2017.

The ‘Soldier of God’ was unsuccessful in claiming the belt though, losing a decision to Robert Whittaker.

Despite that loss his next outing, in February 2018, would also be for the interim crown.

He knocked out Luke Rockhold in that fight, but a missed weight cut meant he did not leave UFC 221 with the belt.

That would prove to be his last win to date, with three straight decision defeats.

His win over Rockhold had earned Romero a shot at the title but once again he failed to make weight.

The rematch with Whittaker went ahead though as a non-title fight and Romero lost via decision.

Paulo Costa then bested him over three rounds, but despite three losses in four fights the Cuban fighter was granted another title shot in March of last year.

Romero made weight on this occasion but came out on the losing end of the judges’ scorecards against Israel Adesanya.

That loss left Romero with a 13-5 MMA record, with 11 wins coming via knockout. Of his five losses, only one has come via stoppage.

Verdict

Romero is a dangerous man, but cardio has never been his strong point and he will be the heaviest he has been in his career.

Davis is a natural 205lb’er and has no issues going five rounds. If he fights smart and limits Romero’s explosivity, he should earn a decision win.
