The LIV Golf Series roster continues to grow, with a host of new elite players joining for the start of the season opener in Mayakoba. Who will take home the winner's cheque come Sunday?

Four new players have defected to the LIV Golf Series for the third season, with superstar Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Adrian Meronk, and Caleb Surrat all featuring this weekend.

Past and present major winners who will tee off on Friday include Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Patrick Reed, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Henrik Stenson, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka and Graeme McDowell.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm crushed it on the PGA Tour last year, winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the American Express, the Genesis Invitational and the Masters in nine tournaments.

Other noteworthy results achieved by Rahm last season include placing T4 at the CJ Cup, T8 at the Hero World Challenge, T7 at the Farmers Insurance Open, 3rd at the WM Phoenix Open, T15 at the RBC Heritage, 2nd at the Mexico Open, T16 at the Memorial Tournament, T10 at the US Open, T2 at the Open Championship, T18 at the Tour Championship, 4th at the BMW PGA Championship, T9 at the Open de Espana and T5 at the DP World Tour Championship.

Rahm is making his LIV Golf Tour debut after his mega-money move and has strong claims to win the title in Mexico this weekend.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann has been in excellent form during his recent stint on the DP World Tour, placing 5th at the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship, victory at the ISPS Handa Australian Open and T4 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Before that, Niemann achieved solid results on the LIV Golf Tour, placing T8 in Singapore, T8 in Tulsa, T10 at Valderrama, T7 in Bedminster, T18 in Chicago and T9 in Jeddah.

Additional highlights achieved by Niemann last year include finishing T10 at the PIF Saudi International, T5 at the International Series in Oman and T16 at the Masters.

The 25-year-old Chilean golfer placed a solid T11 overall in Mayakoba last year.

Niemann has been in great touch lately and will fancy his chances to win his maiden LIV Golf Tour title this weekend.

Dean Burmester

Dean Burmester reeled off back-to-back victories on the DP World Tour at the Joburg Open and Investec South African Open Championship towards the end of last year before finishing T44 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

Before that, Burmester had been competing on the LIV Golf Tour, with his best results being T3 in Orlando, T7 in Adelaide, T8 in Tulsa, T15 in DC, T14 at Valderrama, T17 in London, T7 at Greenbrier, T3 in Bedminster, T18 in Chicago and T17 in Jeddah.

Other prominent performances achieved by Burmester last season include finishing T16 at the International Series in England and 7th at the St Andrews Bay Championship.

The 34-year-old South African placed T20 in Mayakoba last year.

Burmester produced top results during his first season on the LIV Golf Tour and could upstage the others with victory in Mexico.

Patrick Reed

Patrick Reed produced excellent results during his second season in the LIV Golf league, with his best results being T3 in Orlando, T3 in Adelaide, T11 in Tulsa, T13 in Singapore, T5 at Valderrama, T2 in London and T3 in Bedminster.

Reed's other notable achievements from last season include finishing 2nd at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, T25 at the Saudi International, 4th at the Masters, T18 at the PGA Championship, T15 at the Hong Kong Open and T7 at the BNI Indonesian Masters.

The American golfer finished T38 at the 2023 LIV Golf tournament in Mayakoba.

Reed had four top-three places last season and will have a chance of winning at the El Camaleon Golf Course if he can reproduce that form.

Format

An invitational field of 48 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $120,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 12-four-man team format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Rahm is a worthy favourite for the LIV Golf season opener in Mayakoba after his superb performances on the PGA Tour last season.

Niemann has the form to take the title at the El Camaleon Golf Course this weekend.

Burmester did nothing wrong during his debut season on the LIV Golf Tour and can lift the trophy come Sunday.

Reed played well last season and should enter calculations in Mexico this weekend.
