Felix Auger-Aliassime has looked a bit shaky in recent weeks and also carries a habit of making slow starts, often allowing underdogs to stay competitive deep into matches. That vulnerability becomes important here against Daniel Altmaier, who has built strong confidence and momentum in the lead-up to the French Open and is very comfortable in these clay conditions.

Altmaier Brings Upset Potential

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime holds a 2–4 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He owns a 12–3 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.
  • Daniel Altmaier has a 4–1 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He holds a 5–5 career clay record against Top 10 players.

Auger-Aliassime Struggling On Clay Again

Felix Auger-Aliassime continues to struggle on clay, a trend that has carried over from last season. Most recently, he lost to Aleksandar Kovacevic after leading by a set and 4-1 in the deciding set.

The Canadian carried strong momentum into 2026 after a solid finish to last year. He reached the finals in Rotterdam and Montpellier along with the fourth round in Indian Wells before the clay swing began.

Auger-Aliassime opened the clay season with a quarterfinal run in Monte Carlo, but his next three tournaments ended without multiple wins. All three of those recent defeats came against players ranked outside the top 40.

This will be his seventh main-draw appearance at French Open. Apart from fourth-round runs in 2022 and 2024, his other four campaigns in Paris ended in the opening round.

Altmaier Continues Clay Court Improvement

Daniel Altmaier received a confidence boost in his home event in Hamburg, where he reached the quarterfinals after coming from a set down to defeat Ben Shelton before losing to Tommy Paul.

The defeat to Paul extended Altmaier’s losing streak in tour-level quarterfinals to 10 matches, a run that dates back to 2021 and includes his quarterfinal appearance in Bucharest earlier this year.

Despite that statistic, his performances in recent months have still been encouraging, especially after enduring a long winless streak from Brisbane through Miami earlier in the season.

This will be Altmaier’s sixth appearance at French Open. He has cleared the opening round in four of his previous five visits, including fourth-round runs in 2020 and 2025.

Verdict

Altmaier also has a history of producing big results at this tournament, which makes this a very dangerous opening-round matchup for Auger-Aliassime. Backing Altmaier to cover the +5.5 games handicap, win over 16.5 games, over 1.5 sets, and even taking a small punt on the outright upset all look like appealing options here.
