Sebastian Baez has once again struggled to consistently produce his best tennis during this phase of the European clay season, something that has regularly troubled him in previous years as well. Even so, his extensive experience at the French Open and overall pedigree on clay still give him a slight edge against Roman Andres Burruchaga, who may be in better recent form but remains relatively inexperienced at this level.

Baez Holds Experience Edge

  • Sebastin Baez holds a 2–2 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He owns an 11–5 record against players outside the Top 50.
  • Roman Burruchaga is looking to make his mark in Grand Slams this week.
  • He has a 15–6 clay record against players outside the Top 50.

Baez Struggling To Find Consistency

Sebastian Baez made a strong start to the season by reaching the final in Auckland, the semifinals in Santiago and Buenos Aires, and the third round in Indian Wells. However, his form dropped significantly once the tour moved to the European clay swing.

The Argentine has played seven tournaments during the European clay season and managed only four wins overall, without recording consecutive victories. Those struggles caused him to fall more than 25 places in the rankings and drop outside the top 60.

This will be Baez’s fifth main-draw appearance at French Open. He previously cleared the opening round in alternating appearances, while his most recent campaign last year ended with a first-round defeat.

Burruchaga Aims To Rediscover Confidence

Roman Burruchaga arrives in Paris after losing four of his last five matches, including back-to-back early exits in his three most recent tournaments. He suffered opening-round defeats in Rome and Hamburg along with a second-round loss at the Bordeaux Challenger.

The recent slump is disappointing for the Argentine, who had built strong momentum just a few weeks earlier with back-to-back Challenger finals in Sao Paulo and Houston, followed by a semifinal run in Cagliari.

This will be Burruchaga’s second main-draw appearance at French Open. His only previous Grand Slam main-draw match came in Paris in 2024, where he lost in straight sets to Jan-Lennard Struff.

Verdict

Baez should still be capable of finding a way through this matchup, although the nature of both players suggests a long and physically demanding battle. Backing Baez to win, along with over 35.5 games and over 4.5 sets, all look like strong possibilities in this clash between two clay-court specialists.
