The Memorial Tournament Preview & Picks - Best PGA Tour Picks This Week
- The Workday Memorial Tournament takes place between 2-5 June
- The tournament takes place at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio
- Our 4 selections who can win the title
The world's elite golfers head to Ohio for one of the most iconic venues on the PGA Tour. Who will walk away with the honours at the 2022 Memorial Tournament?
Patrick Cantlay returns to defend his title after his triumph in 2021 and will be attempting to win the tournament for the third time in four years.
There are 15 Major winners in the field for the Memorial Tournament including Jon Rahm, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Dufner, Lucas Glover, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett and Gary Woodland.
These are our selections that could win the title this weekend.
Patrick Cantlay
Patrick Cantlay's performance at the recent PGA Championship, where he missed the cut, is best ignored as he had been in excellent form before that disappointing display.
The 30-year-old began his year with fourth at the Tournament of Champions, ninth at the American Express, T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach and runner-up at the Phoenix Open.
His following four results were average, finishing T33, MC, T26 and T39 before he returned to form around the greens with victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and runner-up at the RBC Heritage.
The American golfer has a superb record at the Memorial Tournament, finishing T35 in 2017, 4th in 2018, winning in 2019, T32 in 2020 and winning his second title last year.
Cantlay will be out to redeem himself after his poor effort at the second Major of the year, as he loves playing at this tournament. Can he win his third Memorial Tournament this weekend?
Matt Fitzpatrick
Matt Fitzpatrick continued his impressive performance on the PGA Tour with a T5 place at the PGA Championship.
Before that, the Englishman finished T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T5 at the Valspar Championship, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T14 at the Masters and T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship.
His only poor results have been at the Players Championship and RBC Heritage, where he missed the cut.
The world's number 15 ranked golfer has played at Muirfield Village golf course on three occasions, finishing T68 in 2019, third in 2020 and then missing the cut in 2021.
Fitzpatrick has had three top-five places, three top-10 finishes and two top-20 finishes in ten tournaments in 2022 and can be challenging for the trophy come Sunday.
Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry had a decent result at the recent PGA Championship, finishing T23 overall, but he would have been disappointed as he came into that event on the back of T3 places at the Masters and the RBC Heritage.
Before that, the Irishman finished T12 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, T24 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T14 at the Saudi International, second at the Honda Classic, T13 at the Players Championship, T12 at the Valspar Championship and T35 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.
The 35-year-old's last four Memorial Tournament results are T15, T52, MC, and an excellent T6 in 2021.
If Lowry can reproduce his recent form on the PGA Tour, he can feature prominently and offers an excellent each-way bet this weekend.
Cameron Young
Cameron Young produced another top performance when he placed T3 at his debut PGA Championship two weeks ago.
Before that, he placed T3 at the RBC Heritage and T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The 24-year-old's first four tournament results for the year were MC, T40, T20 and T26. He then came close to winning his first PGA Tour title by placing T2 at the Genesis Invitational.
He continued his good form by finishing T16 at the Honda Classic, T13 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T35 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play. He did miss the cut at both the Players Championship and the Masters.
The American is making his debut at the Memorial Tournament.
Young has finished inside the top three in his last three tournaments and will be full of confidence in Ohio this weekend.
Verdict
Cantlay has won here before and will be looking to bounce back to his best at the Memorial Tournament.
Fitzpatrick has shown he is ready to grab his first PGA Tour title.
Lowry could surprise the others and make the frame this weekend.
Young has been knocking hard and should be in contention for the victory in Ohio come Sunday.
