The PGA Tour and the world's elite players return to the spectacular greens of TPC Sawgrass Golf Course to compete for the coveted Players Championship this weekend. Who will win the unofficial fifth Major come Sunday?

Scottie Scheffler is back to defend his title after a five-stroke victory over Tyrrell Hatton in 2023.

Past and present major winners who will tee off on Thursday at TPC Sawgrass include Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Shane Lowry, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scot, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley, Lucas Glover, Francesco Molinari, Webb Simpson and Gary Woodland.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Will Zalatoris

Will Zalatoris performed reasonably well when he returned to the PGA Tour after a lengthy layoff, finishing 20th at the Hero World Challenge, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii and T34 at the American Express.

Zalatoris has bounced back to his best in his subsequent three events, placing T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T2 at the Genesis Invitational, and 4th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.

The 27-year-old American golfer has finished 21st in 2021, T26 in 2022, and 73rd in 2023 in three starts at the Players Championship.

Zalatoris has been in tremendous touch lately and will fancy his chances to lift the trophy at TPC Sawgrass this weekend.

Sam Burns

Sam Burns has had an excellent beginning to his new season on the PGA Tour, placing T33 at the Sentry, T6 at the American Express, 10th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T3 at the WM Phoenix Open and T10 at the Genesis Invitational before finishing T30 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend.

Before that, Burns had been playing well towards the end of last year, finishing T14 at the Wyndham Championship, T52 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T15 at the BMW Championship, T9 at the Tour Championship and 16th at the Hero World Challenge.

The 18th-ranked player in the world has featured three times at TPC Sawgrass, with results of MC in 2021, T26 in 2022 and T35 in 2023.

Burns has done nothing wrong this season and will be challenging for the Players Championship come Sunday.

Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry has started his 2024 on the PGA Tour in great touch, with results of MC at the American Express, T25 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T60 at the WM Phoenix Open, T4 at the Cognizant Classic and 3rd at the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Before that, Lowry had been playing well on the DP World Tour, placing T3 at the Horizon Irish Open, T18 at the BMW PGA Championship and T18 at the DP World Tour Championship.

The former Open Champion has a long history at the Players Championship, with results of MC in 2015, T16 in 2016, MC in 2017, T46 in 2018, MC in 2019, 8th in 2021, T13 in 2022 and T35 in 2023.

Lowry has threatened to win another PGA Tour title in his last two starts and will have a chance if he can replicate those performances.

Tom Hoge

Tom Hoge did not have the best start to the new season on the PGA Tour, finishing T38 at the Sentry, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T17 at the American Express and T56 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

However, Hoge has come good since February, placing T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T17 at the WM Phoenix Open, 8th at the Genesis Invitational, T28 at the Cognizant Classic and T12 at the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The 34-year-old American has made five appearances at the TPC Sawgrass, with results of T72 in 2018, T30 in 2019, T22 in 2021, T33 in 2022 and T3 in 2023.

Hoge has been in better shape on the golf course lately and is the long-shot value bet in Florida this weekend.

Verdict

Zalatoris has been in excellent form lately and has the game to emerge as the winner at the Players Championship this weekend.

Burns has posted top results this year and looks ready to win another PGA Tour title.

Lowry can convert his recent performances into a winning one in Florida this weekend.

Hoge has been in solid form lately and could cause an upset victory at TPC Sawgrass.
