Wyndham Championship Preview & Picks - 4 Best Picks For North Carolina
- The Wyndham Chapinship takes place between August 4-7
- The tournament takes place at the Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina
- Our 4 selections who can win the title
A competitive field takes to the greens at the Sedgefield Country Club to contest the latest round of the PGA Tour in North Carolina.
Kevin Kisner returns to defend his title after winning a six-way playoff in 2021.
Past major winners who will tee on Thursday include Stewart Cink, Jason Day, Jason Dufner, Lucas Glover, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Danny Willett.
These are our four picks that could win the title this weekend.
Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry has had an excellent year on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, being in contention to win another trophy on numerous occasions.
Lowry placed T12 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, T24 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T14 at the Saudi International, 2nd at the Honda Classic, T13 at the Players Championship, T12 at the Valspar Championship, and T35 WGC Dell Technologies Match Play in his opening seven tournaments of 2022.
The Irishman produced a top performance at the Masters, placing T3 and followed that up with T3 at the RBC Heritage, T23 at the PGA Championship, T32 at the Memorial Tournament and T10 at RBC Canadian Open before missing the cut at the US Open.
The 35-year-old golfer's subsequent two events have been solid, finishing T9 at the Horizon Irish Open and T21 at the 150th Open Championship.
He has had fair results at this event in the past, finishing T42 in 2016, T7 in 2017, MC in 2018 and T23 in 2020.
Lowry has had a runner-up place and two top-three finishes in 2022 and can be in contention to win the title in North Carolina if able to replicate any of his previous performances.
Sungjae Im
Sungjae Im was in excellent form at the start of his year, placing T8 at the Tournament of Champions, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T11 at the American Express and T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The 24-year-old's form was less impressive in his following five events, finishing T33, MC, and T20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T55 and T35.
The Korean refound his touch with four consecutive top performances on the golf course, placing T8 at the Masters, T21 at the RBC Heritage, T15 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T10 at the Memorial Tournament.
His form plunged after those results, missing the cut twice at the US Open and Scottish and finishing T81 at the 150th Open Championship, but he redeemed himself with a T2 place at the recent 3M Open.
He has played well at the Wyndham Championship in the past, with results of T6 in 2019, T9 in 2020 and T24 in 2021.
Im bounced back to his best last time he took to the golf course and has an excellent record at this event which will give him the belief he can win another PGA tour title.
Si Woo Kim
Si Woo Kim has been active on the PGA Tour, playing in 21 tournaments this year.
The Korean golfer finished T23 at the Tournament of Champions, T55 at the Sony Open, T11 at the American Express, T11 at the Farmers Insurance Open and T26 at the Phoenix Open before a poor 73rd at the Genesis Invitational.
The 27-year-old rallied with results of T26 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, WD at the Players Championship, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies World Match Play and T13 at the Valero Texas Open.
His subsequent five events were average to poor, finishing T39, T42, T37, MC and T60 before he came T13 overall at the Memorial Tournament.
Kim's form dropped off sharply, missing the cut in his next three starts, but regained his game with places of T15 at the 150th Open Championship and T14 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this past weekend.
He has an outstanding record at the Sedgefield Country Club, winning this event in 2016, placing 5th in 2019, T3 in 2020 and T2 last year.
Kim has had six top 15 finishes in 2022 and is playing on a course that suits his game. Can he produce another top finish at the Wyndham Championship?
Mark Hubbard
Mark Hubbard missed the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this past weekend, but that result should be ignored, as he had good form prior to that performance.
He missed the cut in his opening two events of the year on the PGA Tour before finishing T33 at the AT&T Pebble Beach, T6 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic (Korn Ferry Tour), 15th at the Honda Classic, and T38 at the Puerto Rico Open and T5 Chitimacha Louisiana Open (Korn Ferry Tour).
The American missed the cut at the Corales Puntacana Championship before he bounced back with a T9 place at the Club Car Championship (Korn Ferry Tour) and T9 at the Veritex Bank Championship (Korn Ferry Tour).
The 33-year-old following seven results were average, finishing T51, MC, T32 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T52, T29 at the REX Hospital Open (Korn Ferry Tour), T44 and T46.
Hubbard's form improved at the John Deere Classic, placing T13, and secured his best result in 2022 with a 3rd at the Barbasol Championship and followed that up with 4th at the Barracuda Championship.
His previous three results at this tournament include T24 in 2017, T15 in 2020 and T51 last year.
Hubbard will be out on the course to make amends for his performance last weekend, and if he can replicate his form before that, he could cause an upset.
Verdict
Im will fancy his chances after his last result to go all the way in North Carolina.
Kim offers an excellent each-way bet at the Wyndham Championship and could take the winner's cheque on Sunday.
Hubbard has been threatening and is the long-shot pick for the weekend.
