The Braves have been hit or miss over the past few weeks, having gone 6-6 over their 12 games prior to Monday’s series-opener.
They split a one-day double-header in St Louis, winning 6-2 before losing 4-1, and then fell to a 1-0 defeat when they visited the Chicago White Sox.
Atlanta rebounded to beat Pittsburgh 6-1 and 2-1, but they missed out on a series sweep as they lost the last game 4-2, and they then sandwiched a 3-1 win over San Francisco with 5-3 and 4-2 losses.
The Braves kicked off the series with Philadelphia with an 8-6 defeat, only to rally with 5-1 and 6-0 victories over the Phillies.
Arizona Diamondbacks Form
Arizona came into this series on the back of a couple of road wins and having won six of their previous eight games.
The Diamondbacks endured a rough run in late June as they were beaten 12-1 and 4-1 in Philadelphia, before failing to build on a 5-4 victory at home to Minnesota.
They lost the next two meetings with the Twins, 8-3 and 13-6, and they then suffered a 9-4 home defeat to Oakland.
Arizona responded well though, beating the A’s 3-0 and 5-1, before rebounding from a 6-5 defeat at the Los Angeles Dodgers with 12-4 and 9-3 victories.
The Diamondbacks then lost the series opener in San Diego, 10-8, only to bounce back with 7-5 and 9-1 wins over the Padres.
Verdict
Atlanta are yet to lose against Arizona this season, and with Chris Sale getting the nod that is unlikely to change tonight.
