  • Boston Red Sox won 6-4 when the two teams last met on September 14

Boston Red Sox Form

Boston ended the regular season with an 89-73 record that placed them third in the AL East standings.

The Red Sox enter this Wild Card series on a mixed run of form, having gone 8-8 over their final 16 games of the regular season.

They dropped two of their three home meetings with both the New York Yankees and the Athletics, before heading out on the road for an improved run.

Boston beat Tampa Bay 11-7 and 6-3 before losing 7-3, and then rebounded with 4-1 and 7-1 victories in Toronto before dropping the finale 6-1.

The Red Sox wrapped up the regular season at home to Detroit, sandwiching a 2-1 defeat to the Tigers with a couple of 4-3 victories.

New York Yankees Form

New York finished the season with the joint best record in the AL East, but their 94-68 record was only good enough for second place due to the head-to-head with Toronto.

The Yankees enter this playoff series on an outstanding run of form, having won 11 of their final 12 games of the regular season.

This sequence began on the road as they won 10-9 and 10-5 in Minnesota, before heading to Baltimore for a 7-0 victory.

New York lost the next meeting with the Orioles 4-2, but responded strongly to close out that road trip with 6-1 and 7-1 victories.

The Yankees then returned home to sweep their final two series of the regular season, beating the Chicago White Sox 3-2, 8-1 and 5-3, and Baltimore 8-4, 6-1 and 3-2.
