Chicago went into this road trip having been on an inconsistent run over the past couple of weeks.
The Cubs enjoyed a winning homecoming after a long road trip, beating Pittsburgh 3-2, but they failed to back that up as they lost the next meeting 2-1.
They rallied to take the next two games in the series though, beating the Pirates 2-1 and 3-2, and they then made it three-in-a-row as they downed Milwaukee, 5-4.
Chicago were unable to maintain that momentum however, losing the second game against the Brewers, 8-7.
The Cubs then hosted Seattle and sandwiched a 10-7 victory with 9-4 and 14-6 defeats to the Mariners.
St Louis Cardinals Form
St Louis entered this series on the back of a defeat, but on a good run of form with six wins in their previous eight games.
The Cardinals endured a bad run earlier this month as they lost six straight games, before finally stopping the rot with an 8-5 win in Milwaukee.
They failed to follow that up as they lost the next meeting with the Brewers, 3-2, although they did rally on the road to wrap up that trip in positive form.
St Louis travelled to Chicago where they were able to sweep the White Sox, winning 12-2, 5-4 and 7-6.
The Cardinals then won back-to-back home games against Cincinnati, 6-1 and 6-5, before dropping the series finale to the Reds, 4-1.
Verdict
Chicago are on a rough run of form and are starting a pitcher that is yet to register a win on the road.
That spells trouble against an in-form St Louis team that has already beaten them twice this week, so give us the Cardinals in this one.
