Detroit entered this series with AL Central rivals Cleveland on a terrible run of form, having lost nine of their previous 10 games.
The Tigers began this miserable sequence with a 9-3 defeat at the New York Yankees, which was then followed by 8-2 and 6-4 losses in Miami.
They did avoid being swept by the Marlins, winning the final meeting 2-0, but they have not tasted victory since that matchup.
Detroit returned home to get swept by Cleveland in a three game series, losing 7-5, 4-0 and 3-1 to the Guardians.
The Tigers then dropped all three home meetings with Atlanta last week, as they were beaten 10-1, 6-5 and 6-2 by the Braves.

Cleveland came into this series as one of the form teams in Major League Baseball, having won 15 of their previous 17 games.
The Guardians started this red-hot run in Tampa as they bounced back from a 4-2 defeat to the Rays with 7-1, 3-2 and 2-1 win to wrap up that series.
They then headed back home to beat Kansas City 10-2 and 2-0, before rebounding from a 4-3 defeat to the Royals with a 3-2 win that kicked off a 10-game win streak.
Cleveland swept the Chicago White Sox with 4-0, 3-1 and 3-2 victories, before heading out on the road to sweep Detroit in a three-game series, recording 7-5, 4-0 and 3-1 wins.
The Guardians extended their streak to 10 games with 6-2, 7-0 and 8-0 wins in Minnesota, only to then see it end as they dropped the final meeting with the Twins, 6-2.
Verdict
Both starters have been in good form recently, so this could be a close encounter.
However, we simply have to go with Cleveland, who have taken full advantage of Detroit's collapse to storm to the summit in the AL Central.
