Detroit Tigers Form

Detroit booked their place in the postseason with an 87-75 record that earned them second place in the AL Central standings.

The Tigers appeared to be cruising towards the playoffs in late August, but their form tailed off badly during the final few weeks of the regular season.

They lost eight straight games between September 16 and September 24, with five of those defeats coming at the hands of Cleveland.

Detroit’s five losses to the Guardians handed top spot in the division to their opponents, and they were unable to get it back over the final weekend of the regular season.

The Tigers wrapped up their schedule in Boston, where they sandwiched a 2-1 win over the Red Sox with a couple of 4-3 defeats.

Cleveland Guardians Form

Cleveland secured their place in the playoffs by compiling an 88-74 record to finish top of the AL Central standings.

The Guardians ended the regular season as one of the in-form teams in Major League Baseball, winning 19 of their final 23 games.

The big run during that sequence was a 10-game tear that included three victories over the Tigers in Detroit.

Cleveland then won back-to-back meetings with Detroit at home, 5-2 and 5-1, to leapfrog the Tigers and take spot in the division.

The Guardians dropped the last meeting, 4-2, and then lost 7-3 at home to Texas, but they won the final two games against the Rangers, 3-2 and 9-8, to claim the division crown.
