Detroit secured their place in the playoffs by putting together an 87-75 record to finish second in the AL Central.
The Tigers would have won their division had it not been for a serious slump in form last month that saw them lose eight straight games; five of them against division rivals Cleveland.
Those losses handed the Guardians top spot by a single game, and set up a Wild Card series shnowdown between the pair.
Detroit enjoyed a winning start in Cleveland, taking it 2-1, and then rallied from a 6-1 loss in Game 2 with a 6-3 victory to advance.
The Tigers opened this series with a victory too, beating Seattle 3-2, but they then dropped the next two meetings, 3-2 and 8-4, to find themselves behind the 8-Ball.
They responded to that adversity though, beating the Mariners 9-3 on Wednesday to set up a Game 5.
Seattle Mariners Form
Seattle secured their place in the postseason by compiling a 90-72 record to finish top of the AL West, securing a first-round bye.
The Mariners clinched the division during a great run of form that saw them win 17 times during an 18-game spell between September 6-25
That run saw them go a perfect 10-0 at home as they swept St Louis in three games, the Los Angeles Angels in four and Colorado in three.
With the division title wrapped up, Seattle was able to take their foot off the gas in the final regular season series, resulting in 3-2, 5-3 and 6-1 losses to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mariners' skid reached four games as they lost the playoff opener to Detroit, 3-2, but they did rally to take the next two meetings, 3-2 and 8-4.
That gave them an opportunity to clinch on the road on Wednesday, but they passed up on that opportunity as they lost 9-3 to the Tigers.
Verdict
Detroit's offense erupted on Wednesday and that is a good sign as they prepare to face an in-form pitcher.
They are also sending their own in-form starter to the mound in Skubal, so we like the Tigers to wrap things up on the road.
