Los Angeles rallied to take two of the next three meetings, sandwiching a 6-1 defeat with a couple of 6-5 wins, but failed to build on that in St Louis.
The Dodgers lost the first two meetings with the Cardinals, 5-1 and 2-1, although they avoided being swept with a 7-3 victory in the series finale.

San Diego come into this series having cooled off with three defeats in their previous five games.
The Padres made a flying start to June as the reeled off three consecutive victories, starting with a 6-4 home success against Pittsburgh.
They backed that up on the road as they then won 1-0 and 3-2 in San Francisco, but they were unable to maintain that good form.
San Diego had to settle for a split of the four-game series with the Giants, losing the final two meetings 6-5 and 3-2.
The Padres then travelled to Milwaukee where they were able to win 2-0 and 1-0 either side of a 4-3 defeat to the Brewers.
Verdict
Both teams have shown some inconsistency in recent times, but San Diego are in slightly better form.
