New York booked their place in the Division Series by eliminating Milwaukee on the road in the Wild Card round.
The Mets secured their place in the postseason by finishing second in the National League East with an 89-73 record, setting up that series with the Brewers.
They went into it in underwhelming form however, having lost four of their final six regular season games.
New York’s rough run included a couple of defeats in Milwaukee, as they lost 8-4 and 6-0 to the Brewers, before winning the series finale 5-0.
The Mets made much better work of the Wild Card showdown though, sandwiching a 5-3 defeat with 8-4 and 4-2 wins to advance.
Philadelphia Phillies Form
Philadelphia secured their place in the playoffs, and a bye, by compiling a 95-67 record to finish top of the National League West.
The Phillies’ 95 wins gave them the second best regular season record in Major League Baseball behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won 98 times.
They do not come into the postseason in the best of form though, having gone 4-6 across their final three series of the regular season.
Philadelphia’s mixed form included a four-game series with playoff opponents New York, which saw them lose three times.
The Phillies did at least wrap up that part of the season with a win, rebounding from 9-1 and 6-3 defeats in Washington with a 6-3 victory.
Verdict
New York have momentum after the upset of Atlanta and starter Kodai Senga has a solid track record against Philadelphia.
That makes the Mets an appealing underdog as they kick off this Division Series.
