New York secured their trip to the playoffs by putting together a 94-68 record during the regular season.
However, despite the impressive record, the Yankees had to settle for second place in the AL East because they lost the head-to-head with playoff opponents Toronto.
That meant they missed out on a first-round bye and had to overcome bitter rivals Boston to make it to the Division Series.
New York went into that Wild Card clash with the Red Sox on a roll, having won 11 of their final 13 regular season games, but they dug themselves into an early hole with a 3-1 defeat in Game 1.
The Yankees rebounded quickly though, and completed the turnaround as they backed up a 4-3 win in Game 2 with a 4-0 series-sealing success on Thursday.

Toronto booked their place in the postseason by putting together a 94-68 record to finish top of the AL East.
The Blue Jays finished with an identical record to the New York Yankees, but they took the head-to-head and that meant they secured a first-round bye.
They return to action having closed out their regular season campaign with four straight victories.
Toronto stacked up a bunch of losses in the second half of September, before a 6-1 win over Boston sparked their late flurry.
The Blue Jays backed up that victory with a series sweep of Tampa Bay, beating the Rays 4-2, 5-1 and 13-4 to wrap up their schedule.
Verdict
We like New York’s chances of taking the series, but for the second straight round we expect them to fall behind early.
