Arthur Fils is generally the more dependable player and the higher-ranked of the two, but there are significant concerns surrounding his fitness at the moment. Rafael Jodar, meanwhile, is enjoying the best season of his career and has also shown great comfort on American hard courts.

The Spaniard produced some impressive results at Challenger level in these conditions last year, which played an important role in his rise up the rankings.

Jodar Aims To Continue His Outstanding Season

  • Fils holds a 7–2 record in first-round matches in 2026.
  • He has an 18–3 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.
  • Jodar holds an 11–2 record in opening-round matches across all levels.
  • He has a 4–2 record against French opponents.

Fils Looks to Restart Outstanding Season

Arthur Fils enjoyed an outstanding start to the season, winning the Barcelona title, finishing runner-up in Doha, reaching the semifinals in Miami and Madrid, and advancing to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells and Monte Carlo.

However, his progress was halted by a hip injury suffered in Rome, forcing him to miss the French Open to focus on his recovery. He returned at Wimbledon but was eliminated in the second round.

Last season, Fils played only one tournament after the French Open because of injury, leaving him with very few ranking points to defend during the remainder of the season. That gives the Frenchman an excellent opportunity to continue climbing the rankings with a strong North American hard-court swing.

Jodar Arrives Full of Confidence

Rafael Jodar has enjoyed a rapid rise this season, climbing from outside the top 150 to the brink of a top-20 debut in the rankings. Most of his breakthrough results have come on clay.

The 19-year-old is still searching for his first tour-level main-draw victory this year, but he has produced five quarterfinal-or-better finishes, including the title in Marrakech, quarterfinal appearances in Rome, Madrid, and the French Open, along with fourth-round runs in Miami and Wimbledon.

Jodar now looks to carry that momentum into Washington. He enters the tournament with an impressive 11-2 record in opening-round matches this season.

Verdict

Fils deserves respect for his superior experience and overall level, but his fitness concerns make Jodar an intriguing underdog. Taking a chance on Rafael Jodar to win and Jordar to win in three sets looks like a worthwhile option.
