Philadelphia claimed a playoff place by putting together a 96-66 regular season record to finish top of the NL East.
Only one team won more regular season games than the Phillies, and that meant their mark was enough to secure a first-round bye.
They wrapped up the regular season by rebounding from a run of three straight defeats with four wins in their final five games.
Philadelphia stopped the rot with an 11-1 demolition of Miami at home, and they then backed up that victory with a 1-0 win over the Marlins and a 3-1 success at home to Minnesota.
The Phillies dropped the second meeting with the Twins, 5-0, but issued an immediate response as they ended the regular season with a 2-1 victory.
They found themselves in series danger of a swift playoff exit though, as they lost the first two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-3 and 4-3, but they rallied on the road with a big 8-2 win in Game 3.

Los Angeles booked their place in the postseason by compiling a 93-69 record to finish atop the NL West standings.
However, the Dodgers’ record was not enough for them to earn a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
They instead head to overcome Cincinnati to make the Division Series, and they went into that series in good form, having won nine of their final 11 regular season games.
Los Angeles’ strong run included a four-game win streak that closed out the regular season, which saw them beat Arizona 5-4 before sweeping Seattle with 3-2, 5-3 and 6-1 wins.
The Dodgers then took that win streak to six games in the Wild Card round, as they made straightforward work of the Reds thanks to 10-5 and 8-4 victories.
That red-hot run reached eight games with 4-3 and 5-3 victories over the Phillies in Philadelphia, but they failed to complete the series sweep on Wednesday as they lost 8-2 at home.
Verdict
Taking on Los Angeles at home is a risky proposition, but that is exactly what we are doing.
Philadelphia's recent record at Dodger Stadium is strong, and they can take advantage of some of the issues that LA starter Tyler Glasnow has been having.
